BYOX
- This is the third year that Year 4 have taken part in the BYOX
(Bring your own device x-multiple devices) program. This exciting program provides students with many opportunities to prepare themselves for 21st Century learning. Because we use these devices in the classroom on a daily basis, it is important that students ensure that they have fully charged their devices before coming to school.

Term 1
English – In this unit students will complete a
novel study on The Twits . They will look at the authors style of writing and sense of humour. They will write their own new chapter for the book. Learning Goal - We are learning to apply our knowledge of language features and author devices to plan, write and publish an entertaining story.
We are learning to use comprehension strategies to identify and describe the effect of language features and author techniques in narratives.
Art-Linked to the English unit, "The Twits“, Students will study the cartooning techniques of Quentin Blake and use these skills to illustrate their chapter.
Maths –
- Place value – different ways to
represent numbers, partitioning.
- Modelling multiplication and division
– recalling a range of multiplication, division and extended facts. Develop fluency.
Learning Goal We are learning to recall number facts and solve problems using the four operations.
Science – Why are some living things endangered?
This term in science we are studying endangered or vulnerable animals. The students will complete a case study before researching their own to share with classmates.
Geography- Let’s go on a safari!
This term the students will build on their mental maps of the world by spotlighting on the continents and countries

English – Students will read, view and listen to a range of persuasive product
- advertisements. They learn about target
audiences, commercial packaging and

design and promote a commercial package for their own product.

Science –Material Matters Students study how materials are made and how they can be used sustainably. Geography– Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Students take part in setting up a reducing waste project at home and at school. Media – Students explore advertising techniques and layouts. Digital Technology – Students will design their own cereal box.
English – Students will be reading and
viewing a variety of historical texts including diaries, logs, journals, newspaper reports and

set in the past from a different perspective.

- Money – purchasing, change

Science – Feel the Force In this unit students investigate how forces affect objects through direct contact and from a distance. History – Great Explorers of the World. This will include the journey of the First Fleet to Australia. Drama – Bringing history to life through short skits. Digital Technology – Completing a range of digital tasks.

Term 4
English – In this unit student will investigate traditional stories from around the world that contain a moral. They will learn comprehension strategies to help them interpret these stories. Students will create their own stories that will teach a lesson. Maths – Our emphasis will be on:
- Fractions and decimals
- Solving purchasing problems
- Number patterns and algebra
- Chance and data
- Number facts fluency
Science – Here Today, Gone Tomorrow Students will be exploring weathering and erosion of the Earth’s surface. History – Students will study the impacts of colonisation on Indigenous groups. Art – Indigenous art. Digital Technology – Students will create a multimedia version of a story.

Assessment
Homework
Homework will be handed out on Monday and is due in on Friday. Homework includes spelling, which is written out in their book each night of the week using the LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE, CHECK method. Multiplication Tables need to be done each week, this will include: 2 x 5 = 10 (multiplication strategy) 10 ÷ 5 = 2 (turnaround) 20 x 5 = 100 (extension strategy) Children should be reading for at least 15 minutes per night. While most children in Year 4 can read, they need help with their comprehension and vocabulary. Homework will also include some of the following each week, maths, problem solving, grammar, history and science. If your child is struggling with the homework it is important you come in and see you child’s teacher.
