Assessments v Diagnostic - administered prior to the teaching of concepts to see what student already knows about a topic. v Formative - administered throughout units to check for understanding. v Summative - administered to evaluate a student’s understanding of a learning target after the teaching of concepts.

  6. BYOT – Bring Your Own Technology v Discovery is now a BYOT school. We will begin in October . v Students are invited to bring in their own personal devices – iPads, Chromebooks, laptops, etc. v We will use the devices for academic purposes only - ST Math, Interactive Achievement, Raz Kids, Kidblog, Wixie, etc. v BYOT is not mandatory. Devices will be provided for children without a personal device.

  7. Belongings v Please make sure that all items that your child brings to school are clearly labeled . Many coats, sweaters, gloves, and hats look alike. v Please leave all toys at home, as these items tend to get lost or broken and are distracting. v Your child is welcome to bring a water bottle with a pop-up or straw lid to have on his or desk.

  8. Birthdays v Birthdays are very special in Room 205! We will celebrate your child with a birthday routine during Morning Meeting. v Loudoun County Food Policy - “no food is to be brought into and shared within the classroom.” v If you plan to invite every student of Room 205 to a birthday party for your child, I am happy to distribute invitations.

  9. Book Orders v Approximately once a month, I will send home Scholastic Book Club flyers, which offer books at reduced prices. v If you choose to participate, you can do so by logging onto www.scholastic.com/parents. v Our “Classroom Code” is GYJH6.

  10. Communication v Open lines of communication v Parent / teacher partners v I will communicate with you electronically via email – lori.kruse@lcps.org v If this does not work for you, please let me know, and I will be happy to establish another means of communication.

  11. Dismissal Changes/Absences v For all changes in after-school arrangements, please: v Email dis-absentee@lcps.org and v Email me at lori.kruse@lcps.org or send in a note v Without a note or phone call to the office, I am unable to allow any changes from usual arrangements. v If your child will be absent due to an appointment or family trip, please inform me as soon as possible. This will allow me to provide your child with any assignments he or she will miss during the absence.

  12. Homework v The primary homework for your child will be: v Reading . 20 minutes per night v Complete Reading Log v v Math at least 30 minutes each week on Reflex Math v v There will be occasional projects

  13. Lunch v Packers – Please send your child’s lunch in a clearly labeled lunch box. v Buyers – Please send all money to school in an envelope with your child’s name and five-digit number clearly indicated. v Families are welcome to join us! – 11:10 – 11:40am

  14. Trailblazer of the Week v Each week we will celebrate a Trailblazer of the Week. v Bongo the Nature Bear will come home of Friday. Please encourage your child to explore outside with Bongo and then write about their adventures. v Students will share “All About Me Poster.” v Students will have “Lunch Bunch” with a friend in the classroom.

  17. ParentVUE v Visit the ParentVUE from the Discovery website. v An activation key is required to activate account. v If you do not have an activation key, please contact Discovery Elementary at 571-252-2370.
