  5.  Why is there a need to rethink the High School Bell Schedule? 5

  6. Schedule demands for Students? • Core 24 -new graduation requirements (E2SSB) • College and Career readiness (rigor & flexible) • Interventions for struggling learners • Equal access for all students • Opportunity for Advisory • Small Learning Communities – Problem-based Learning opportunities • Opportunity to address student stress 6

  7. High School Graduation Requirements Current Sophomores Change Change Change Change Change 7

  8. What are others doing to address the challenges?  About 1/3 of high schools are pursuing a change in bell schedule (or have changed recently)  About 1/3 of high schools don’t need to change as they already have a bell schedule that accommodates a 24 credit high school diploma  About 1/3 of districts have requested the two year waiver from the State Board of Education delaying implementation of new requirements Source: Association of Washington School Principals 8

  9. What is happening across the state?  62% of high schools are sitting on a 6 period day ◦ Mostly 3A and 4A comprehensive HS ◦ More rural schools are using a 7-8 period day  38% of high schools are using a 4X8, 4X4 block or seven period/block schedule  School Districts/High Schools have adopted or considering a 3X5 Trimester schedule ◦ Kelso , Sunnyside , Renton, Seattle, Eastmont, Aberdeen, Lake Washington, Peninsula, Port Angeles, Shelton, and others .  88 school districts have applied for a 2 year waiver delaying implementation of CORE 24 Source: Association of Washington School Principals 9

  16. HSSAC Activities  18 committee meetings since March 2016  Conducted a parent, student and staff survey  Student focus group meeting (November/March)  Parent information night (November/March)  Up-to-date HSSAC website  3 MSHS staff work sessions (June, November, and January)  Narrowed down to 3 schedule option and conducted 3 school site visits ◦ Kelso High School (3x5) – Federal Way High School (4x8) – Mercer Island High School (7 Per. Alt block) 16

  17. Keys Factors to Insure Successful Selection and Implementation of a New Bell Schedule  Identify Goals  Involve Staff, Parents, Students, District Office, and the Teacher’s Association.  Research and identify benefits for both students/teacher  Visit other schools  Create, review sample schedules for both teachers and students  Develop and implement a professional development plan: • Pacing guides, lesson design and Instructional Strategies (do not ASSUME that teachers will change instruction to fit the block schedule without ongoing professional development) • Continue PD after first year of implementation  Evaluate schedule on a yearly basis  Review school policies to align with new schedule  Review Financial Impacts 17

  18. Site Visits: What did we learn…?  Students/most staff liked having one or more longer instructional periods during the week.  All reported “calmer” school atmosphere on block days as a result of fewer transitions.  All reported increased flexibility and choice for students, but that often means “new” classes have to be created and teachers have to prepare for.  Mercer Island - Staff may not having planning time every day. Students had option of an “open period” in schedule.  Federal Way – all Freshman took a Freshman support class to help with transition to high school.  Longer periods very conducive to authentic AP practice exams.

  20. Preliminary Estimate of Incremental Impact of a Schedule Change Financial vs. Class Size Schedule Estimated Financial Estimated Class Size Impact Impact Current 6 Period NA Target 27/class 3 x 5 Trimester $525,000 29/class 4 x 8 Alternating Block $1,000,000 31/class 7 Period Alt. Block $1,400,000 33 • Current MSHS class size average ~25 • Solution may be a combination of incremental cost increase and increase to average class size. 20

  24. Table Group Discussion/Activity Review and discuss the daily schedule, and 4 year plan through the lens of your student(s) and how might this schedule positively or negatively impact their high school experience? For example: ◦ Balance academic needs with academic exploration (credit recovery, AP, electives, music, career interests, etc.) ◦ Impact on student workload ◦ Continuity of courses and ability to fulfill course outcomes and requirements ◦ Consistent instructional time ◦ Impact of student absenteeism ◦ Student stress level Record questions, noticing’s and wonderings 24
