History of the Sarah E. Tanner Women’s Missionary Society

“TRANSFORMING LIVES--BUILDING COMMUNITIES” In 1896, the first missionary society was organized at Saint Andrew African Methodist Episcopal Church. The Society became a member of the West Tennessee Conference in 1906 and was named the Sarah E. Tanner Missionary Society in 1910 in honor of the wife of Bishop Benjamin Tanner. The Society was divided into

  • rganized circles, which later became known as units. In the

beginning there were three units: Dorcas, Esther, and Lucy M.

  • Hughes. As the membership and interests of the Society

expanded the M.R. Todd Unit was added and in more recent years the Lydia Unit was formed. The first Junior Missionary Society, now known as the Young People’s and Children’s Division (YPD), was organized under the leadership of Mrs. Velma Sherman. Following the Mrs. Sherman the YPD was under the direction of women called by God to teach the youth and perform mission

  • projects. Those leaders include: Mrs. Leona Jamison, Mrs.

Ernestine Rivers, Mrs. Gloria Massey-Ward, Dr. Helen Reed- Broughton, Mrs. Rosemary Todd-Johnson, Mrs. Irma Self-Davis,

  • Mrs. Brenda Gaines-Ollie, Mrs. LaTonya Ward-Lacy, and currently
  • Ms. Allison M. Thompson. Our Society has maintained a standard
  • f excellence in missions for one hundred and twenty years under

the leadership of it’s former presidents. The former presidents, in chronological order, were: Josie Carr- Pruitt, who served thirty-six years, Pinkie Robinson, Willa Gilton, Roberta Edmiston, Irma Bearden, Willie Young, Mamie R. Todd, Maggie Ball, Sylvia Jeffferson, Hattie Gilton, Irene Phillips-Massey, Gloria Massey-Ward, Lesa Halfacre, and Naomi Dyson. Today, under the leadership of Mrs. Deborah Dawkins-Massey, we continue our tradition of providing service to the needy of the church and the community. Because of its committed and illustrious leaders, especially the ones we honor today, we look forward to transforming lives and building communities during the 21st century.
