Case Study: (Abbas’s Dilemma)
Read the following case and then answer the following questions………..
SLIDE 17
Abbas, a Ph.D. student in School of Pharmacy, has finished three years
- f research work. The chair of his thesis committee is Professor Fawzia.
Abbas came to her lab in part because he wanted to work with her and has been happy that she has taken on the role of mentor. Their relationship has been a great one. Recently, Professor Fawzia discussed with him another area of research to be added. This part needs at least two years of research. So, now Abbas is troubled because in his estimation he is ready to graduate. He decided to ask advice from two of his colleagues, Ahmed and Mohamed. Ahmad replied that Professor Fawzia is not a broad minded person, thus talking with her ends in useless discussion. He suggested just following her instructions blindly. On the other hand, Mohamed had a positive impression about Professor Fawzia as a former Ph.D. student. He suggested compromising with her demands by showing acceptance to follow her directions. In this case, there will be a potential resolution of his problem. Abbas appreciated Mohamed’s advice and he decided to discuss his situation with Dr. Fawzia.
