  12. HIGH RELIABILITY The 4Navitas turbines are specifically designed to ensure low maintenance over their lifetime. The majority of operating machinery components, such as motors/gears/electronics etc are in a sealed walk-in cabin at ground level for easy access. The biggest source of failure in Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines ( HAWTs ) is the gearbox. Constant vibration on the transmission shaft reduces the lifetime of the gearbox. The 4Navitas turbines are designed with very high reliability gearboxes, thus reducing costs and downtime.

  13. HIGH RELIABILITY HAWTs need to be able to detect when the wind changes direction, and to move the turbine blades to face into the wind. This requires sensors to detect the change, and motors to turn the turbine to face into the wind. The blades of the turbine also need to be adjusted ( pitch ). This requires sensors, a control system and motors. All of these devices can and do fail. The 4Navitas Vertical Axis Wind Turbine ( VAWT ) does not use any of these components. This leads to much higher reliability. The blades of the 4Navitas VAWT turn at only 32 rpm which reduces wear and tear on the turbine.

  16. EASY MAINTENANCE HAWTs have the generator and gearbox at the top of the tower. This means that whenever a generator or gearbox has to be replaced, a crane is required to be brought in to remove the faulty unit. Cranes are expensive to hire, and in many cases there is a waiting time for the crane to be available. During this time, the turbine is not producing electricity and money is being lost. The 4Navitas VAWT has both the generator and gearbox inside a climate controlled shelter at the base of the turbine. This provides for easy access to both devices. Routine maintenance is required only once a year.

Shadow Flicker is a phenomenon whereby an irritating, moving shadow is cast across houses and offices that are close to an HAWT. This shadow can disturb livestock in rural settings.   32. BIRD FRIENDLY Each year, many birds are killed by HAWTs around the world. Due to a form of optical illusion, birds think that they can fly between the turbine blades. At the tips of the propeller blades, there is a low pressure region which acts like a vacuum, and can “suck” birds into the blades. Insects are also attracted to the heat generated by the transmission shaft. Birds then follow the insects, and are killed by the blades. Birds fly around the blades of the 4Navitas VAWT, instead of trying to fly through them. Our blades do not travel fast enought to generate a vacuum. Any heat generated in our turbine is at the base, well away from the blades.

  34. RADAR FRIENDLY Many types of radar systems ( military, civilian, scientific, weather etc ) are present worldwide. HAWTs are banned from being anywhere near radar systems. This can mean within 20 miles of certain types of radars. It is estimated that 30% of all HAWT wind turbine zoning ( planning ) applications are rejected in the UK due to objections from radar operators, especially air traffic control systems. HAWTs appear as flickering interference on air traffic control radar screens. The 4Navitas VAWT appears as a solid, non-moving object on the radar screen. This is much more appealing to radar operators. 4Navitas has operated a turbine very close to a military radar in the UK with no interference.
