Graphic Medicine refers to the use of graphic novels, comics and visual storytelling in medical education and patient care.

UHN Education Library & Information Services
Is anyone else at the institution doing something similar?
Would you like to continue being involved in further stages of the process and/or be kept updated? What should we be including in this collection? Are you currently using health narratives in education or practice? How? How do you see published health narratives fitting into education and practice?
In 2019, UHN Patient Experience launched the Declaration of Patient Values.

WHAT WE WANT IS NOT NECESSARILY WHAT EVERYONE ELSE WANTS
Graphic medicine is super interesting! But it's only one piece of the kind of collection
TALK, LISTEN, COLLABORATE
"IF YOU WANT TO MOVE FAST, GO ALONE. IF YOU WANT TO GO FAR, GO TOGETHER."
BE PATIENT WITH THE PROCESS
WE EXPECTED RESISTANCE BUT INSTEAD RECEIVED STRONG SUPPORT
THE IMPORTANCE OF DISCOVERABILITY
Create a space that feels accessible and safe to have book club Create a resource guide for web comics + journals that have personal health narrative spotlights Make it highly searchable in the Virtual Library
THINK/PAIR/SHARE
Think about it on your own Chat with folks at your table about your ideas Share what your table came up with 1. 2. 3.
Question: If you were to create a similar collection, how would you promote it? Dream big!
IN-HOUSE
Designed by us and hosted at different library sites Discussion facilitated by library staff
KITS
Pre-formulated kits that can be loaned to other departments Specifically tailored discussion guides
EVENTS THAT HIGHLIGHT PARTICULAR BOOKS FROM THE COLLECTION
Partner with other departments to plan workshops where staff can learn how to create their own graphic or narrative medicine Solicit relevant material written and/or illustrated by UHN staff to be included in the collection
Create an agreement between GTA health libraries to share their health narratives collection
Connect with other departments to solicit program or promotional ideas to best engage their members in using library services and specifically this collection
What's the best way to measure the success of this initiative?
