What are “National Qualifications”?
- There are 5 possible levels in each subject
– National 3 – National 4 – National 5 – Higher – Advanced Higher

What are “National Qualifications”?
- They provide 3 main pathways
through a subject over S3 to S6.

What are “National Qualifications”?
- In most subjects, all pupils work on a
common course initially and decisions about N3,N4 or N5 levels will be made later in S3 or possibly into S4.
- In other subjects such as Maths and
English, pupils may be assigned to a level at the start of the course based on their prior attainment.

National 4 Qualifications
- Each course is made up from some
units, usually three.
- The units are studied either all
together or one after another.
- There is internal assessment for
each unit – PASS / FAIL.

National 4 Qualifications
- Added Value Unit – Students will
demonstrate skills which underpin key aspects of course work.
- You must pass the Added Value Unit
and all the Unit Assessments to get an overall award.
- There is no external exam at the end
- f the course. The award is pass/fail.

- Most courses are made up from some
units, usually three.
- The units are studied either all together or
- ne after another.
- Each Unit has internal assessment which
will result in – PASS / FAIL.
- You must pass all the Unit Assessments
to get an overall award.

- In most subjects the Course Grade is derived
from the final examination and the internal coursework (performance, evaluations, portfolios, research tasks)
- Grades available:
– A, B, C, D, No Award
