MARCH UPDATE

SLIDE 2
  • Beginning at the onset
  • f puberty (~12 y.o.),

adolescents develop as much as a two-hour sleep-wake cycle delay.

  • Later sleep onset and

wake-up times-as compared to sleep cycles in middle childhood (8- 12y.o.).

  • This occurs for all

adolescents, regardless of cultural background.

  • Delayed evening onset of

natural Melatonin secretion (“phase delay”).

  • Why we see a shift from

ideal functioning in morning in children to evening in adolescents.

  • Peak wakefulness is still
  • ccurring around 9pm.
  • Difficulty falling asleep

before 11pm; ideal wake time becomes 8am.

  • Their inability to fall asleep

is not a form of rebellion

  • Sleeping later on

weekends/days off does not help.

  • Further disrupts

circadian sleep cycles and decreases day time alertness

Keyes (2014), Owens et al.(2010)

  • f students

reported they feel they usually get too little sleep.

  • f students said

they feel tired during the day, several days a week.

61%

  • f students

reported going to bed 11PM or later on school nights.

53% 46%

Administered to WSSD students, grades 8-12 in Fall of 2019:

Completed by nearly 1150 students (approximately 76%)

slide-4
SLIDE 4

National Sleep Foundation

8.5-9.5 hours of sleep per night

American Academy of Pediatrics

8-10 hours of sleep per night

However, most teens are getting less than 7 hours per night. Due to phase delay in adolescents, onset of "sleepiness" (melatonin secretion) can be delayed until 10:30 –11PM, making the ideal wake time 8 -8:30AM.

The Advisory Committee realizes that the biologically driven changes in adolescent sleep patterns are beyond the control of adolescents, their parents,

  • r their teachers.

While a number of other approaches to address adolescent sleep needs exist, the CDC has declared that “[A]mong the possible public health interventions for increasing sufficient sleep among adolescents, delaying school start times has the potential for the greatest population impact by changing the environmental context for students in entire school districts.” Therefore, the Advisory Committee believes that school districts should consider studying the advisability of changing their secondary school hours.

  • WSSD School Board voted to begin a study on adolescent

sleep needs and school start times in our District (May, 2019)

  • Formation of district and school based committees, seeking

participants from a cross section of stakeholders

  • Planned community engagement evenings and school

board presentations

  • 4 Committees

Created to conduct research, gather and analyze logistical data and evaluate scheduling models for best fit within the WSSD context

  • 8 Presentations

Delivered to the School Board, faculty, students and/or community to share information and gather input

  • 50+ Contributors

Including students, staff members, parents, school administrators, School Board members, and external partners

  • 90+ Transportation Scenarios

Analyzed and vetted by Transfinder and the WSSD Transportation Deptartment

slide-8
SLIDE 8
  • New High School start time

should be as close as possible to recommended 8:30 AM.

  • Must satisfy state-mandated

instructional minutes at all levels.

  • Maintains block schedule at HS.
  • Includes a minimum of 50

minutes for music practice at MS & HS.

  • Minimizes the instructional

time that may be lost by MS & HS athletes.

  • Maintains activity bus runs for

SHMS & SHHS.

slide-9
SLIDE 9
  • High School Scheduling Think Tank met to explore schedule types,

teacher survey data, lunch configurations, potential start times, music program, vocational school/dual enrollment programs, instructional minutes, athletics, and passing times. (September, 2019)

  • Through committee work, schedule ideas emerged (46 total schedule

variants). Faculty feedback was collected, and ideas were sent to Transfinder/WSSD Transportation Department for transportation impact. After subsequent reviews, all 46 schedules were eliminated due to either requiring too many buses or not meeting PA instructional minutes.

  • A

new approach was adopted by the Core Committee to minimize transportation costs by starting with potential school start times based on Transfinder created bus runs.

  • 47 new bus schedules were provided to WSSD from Transfinder. It becomes

evident in this report that possible impact on elementary and middle school start times is unavoidable.

slide-10
SLIDE 10
  • The Core Committee reviewed, verified, categorized, and narrowed down potential new start

times based on transportation runs. (January, 2020)

  • Schedules were eliminated due to:
  • Not meeting PA Instructional minutes for all schools
  • Not getting close enough to recommended start time (8:30) for SHHS students
  • Significant transportation costs due to the number of buses needed
  • School-based Scheduling Think Tanks met in late January 2020 to look at building schedules,

based on 4 remaining start time ideas.

  • Further verification of transportation runs eliminated two ideas, leaving two ideas to
  • consider. One of these remaining ideas was tweaked by 15 minutes to allow for three ideas

(A, B, and C) to be share with stakeholders.

  • All Transfinder transportation projections were verified again by the WSSD transportation

department.

  • Presented an update on process and the potential School Start Time Ideas to the School Board

Subcommittee and Task Force relative to current start times.

Parents/ Community Teachers Students

  • Ripple effect on elementary

and/or middle school start times

  • Impact on students who

participate in school-based music and athletics

  • Impact on vo-tech students
  • Impact on taxes
  • Preserve block schedule at

SHHS

  • Athletes missing instructional

time

  • Start time changes that would

have implications on teachers lives outside of school day and teacher contract

  • Being able to participate in

music and athletic programs

  • Athletes missing class
  • Amount of time after school for

homework and other commitments

  • Missing the bus in the morning

and not having parent home to drive them
