1916 – First Convention in Cleveland , OH (16 clubs, 1926 members) (George Hixson elected president) 1916 – Adopted Walter Kiwanis, a five year old at risk in Detroit 1917 – Kiwanis became International, new club in Hamilton, Ontario 1917 – First Kiwanis magazine – Kiwanis Hornet, later Kiwanis Torch 1918 – Kiwanis established 1st international office in Chicago, 2 rooms 1919 – Purchase of Kiwanis name from Browne, $17,500. 1920 – ‘We Build’, Kiwanis motto coined 1920 – 28,500 members in 267 clubs 1922 – First convention outside U. S. (Toronto, Ontario) 1924 – Established the six Objectives of Kiwanis (remain unchanged to this day) 1924 – Moved Kiwanis Office to larger facilities in Chicago (over 90,000 members and over 1,200 clubs) 1925 – First Key Club was formed in Sacramento, CA
