A Message from Our Director
Welcome to the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science – the country’s only science center that is part of a top-tier, public research university. This distinctive affiliation allows the Hall to partner with world-class scientists, engineers, educational leaders, and teachers, with the goal of developing and disseminating the most innovative and effective science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs available today. Our mission is to inspire and foster science learning for all – especially for those with limited access to science. .....

Are you interested in programming a satellite to study science? Students in this one-week camp get the chance to design and build a robotic "space station." Using Hummingbird microcontrollers, campers will write programs using Scratch that will help the space station fire its thrusters, search for light sources, block incoming asteroids, and respond to voice commands given by its crewmembers from inside. We will collaborate and compete in teams during the program. Campers will learn computer programming skills and computational thinking skills while putting their science knowledge into practice.
Have you ever wondered how engineers figure out ways to build safe, strong structures like bridges, buildings, and roller coasters? We will meet on the UC Berkeley campus and work in the lab to explore the various concepts behind designing and building structures. We’ll complete an engineering design challenge with multiple solutions, analyze our solutions with computer software, and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each solution. We’ll synthesize our newfound knowledge with the final challenge of creating a roller coaster. What you learned in physics class has just come to life!

LSI is a science internship, not limited to programming, using
software & hardware tools to achieve real-life science practicum
Scratch is a free, tile-based visual programming language developed by the MIT Media Lab that is an excellent first language for children or adults to learn . It was created to help learn to think creatively, reason systematically and work collaboratively. In Scratch, programs are also called scripts that you write to control electronics or robotics. Hummingbird is an electronics or robotics kit that allows students to create and program robots built from electronic components and craft materials. Hummingbird kit was designed at CMU’s CREATE Lab. Arduino is an open source computer hardware and software kits for building digital devices and interactive objects that can sense and control objects in the physical world. From program language perspective, Arduino is a simplified version of Java, applied to specific needs of creating programs for microcontrollers, but much easier to get started with.
