Cultural Wall Goals

Developed with public and Advisory Committee Input

  • Artistically honor and celebrate the history and

culture of the Bronzeville community, located east and west of I-71 (King-Lincoln and Discovery Districts)

  • Tell a story in a visually compelling way
  • Create a signature, iconic feature – the first of its

kind in the state of Ohio

  • Include the community in the decision-making

Cultural Wall Process

  • Dec. 2011 – Convened Advisory Committee (AC)
  • Jan. 2012 – Finalized submission guidelines with AC
  • Feb.6 – Issued call for proposals (via arts community,

mailings and media)

  • Feb 16 – Briefed interested artists
  • March 21 – Draft proposals received
  • April 11 – AC invited two finalists to further refine

concepts

  • June 8 – More detailed artists’ concepts submitted
  • June 21 – Public unveiling of concepts

Next Steps in the Process

  • July 6: Public comments due
  • Mid-July: AC reconvenes to review comments and

recommend a concept for the wall. Artists are notified.

  • Mid-July/Mid-August: Artist(s) refines concept
  • August: Concept presented to the Columbus Arts

Commission (CAC)

  • September: Final refinements, if needed per AC and

CAC input

  • November 2012/Summer, 2013: Final

production/fabrication of the Cultural Wall begins

  • Fall, 2013: Public unveiling of the Cultural Wall

Artist Eligibility Requirements

  • Any artist, photographer, or any team of artists

and/or photographers, designers, historians and/or writers, with a personal connection to Bronzeville (Discovery and King-Lincoln Districts)

  • Must have been born, resided, worked, or

attended school or church in the area or are located there today

– From Leonard Ave. (north) to Livingston Rd. (south), Cleveland Ave (west) to Nelson/Alum Creek Rd. (east) – Or Leonard Ave (north) to Broad St (south), Cleveland Ave (west) to Woodland Ave. (east)
