As Agile is more accepted as the way to develop software in organizations, some software teams and groups within IT are also becoming Agile, but with using Kanban as their chosen Agile methodology. By leveraging Kanban in addition to Scrum, other groups in the organization like marketing, legal, finance, sales, etc... are also embracing Agile by using Kanban boards to improve the way their business processes flow across the organization. Dimitri shares his vast experience to illustrate how

  • rganizations have introduced Kanban across levels and functions of their organizations. You will

learn Kanban and walk away with real examples/techniques that you can implement immediately within your organization.

Kanban Origins

The name 'Kanban' originates from Japanese[看板], and translates roughly as "signboard" or "billboard“. Kanban is a method for managing work with an emphasis on just-in-time delivery while not overloading the team members. The process, from definition of a card to its delivery to the customer, is displayed for participants to see and team members pull work from a queue.

  • Encourage acts of leadership at all levels

Properties

  • Visualize the workflow
  • Limit Work-In-Progress (WIP)
  • Measure and manage the flow

Kanban Board - Start Simple

Start with a simple board:

  • Start with a simple task board with three columns: to do, in process, and done.
  • Each card represents a work item in the current scope. Names can be associated with the

cards.

  • The key is to set up an easy way to visualize the work, and create an area for social interactions.

SLIDE 8

Kanban Board - Be Realistic

Do not overload your Kanban board:

  • As you start flowing cards, be aware of Muri, which focuses on not overburden your board.
  • Understand that multitasking doesn't work and embrace this mantra: “stop starting, and start

finishing.”

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Kanban Board - Set WIP Limits

Invest in WIP limits and a better flow on your Kanban board:

  • To truly embrace Kanban, we must regulate the volume of cards on the board. This can easily

be accomplished by identifying clear thresholds associated to better defined stages of work (columns). Use a simple formula to determine your initial WIP limit WIP limit = (team members) x 2 – 1

Kanban Board - Mechanics

  • 2. The team pulls a new card

from the "Ready" column and starts working on it by placing it in the "In Progress" column.

  • 3. The team responds to the

pull event and selects the next priority card by moving it to the "Ready" column.

  • 1. The team delivers a card

and moves it to the "Done" column.

Kanban Board - Flow Now that we have established our team capacity and we have a pull system, we can streamline the ideal flow.

Kanban Organization

SLIDE 17

Lean Thinking

How to organize human activities to deliver more benefits to society and value to individuals while eliminating waste, by focusing on these concepts: Value, Value Streams, Flow, Pull and Perfection.

The Agile Organization Agile Mindset

Individuals and interactions over processes and tools Working software over comprehensive documentation Customer collaboration over contract negotiation Responding to change over following a plan

Organizational agility is the ability of an organization to effectively sense and adapt in complex, rapidly changing conditions so that it can thrive as an organization.

Kanban Metrics

slide-23
SLIDE 23

Throughput for Performance

Throughput is based on actual data to represent the number of cards delivered in a given period of time on a specific Kanban board. This metric will provide the team represented on a Kanban board a way to track their performance over time.

https://kanbanzone.com/2017/throughput-cycle-time-metrics-kanban-performance-responsiveness/

slide-24
SLIDE 24

Cycle Time for Responsiveness

Cycle Time is calculated from the time a card is worked on by the team until the time the card is

  • delivered. In simple terms,

it’s how long a card stays within the Work-In-Progress (WIP) columns of your board.

slide-25
SLIDE 25

Estimate with Cycle Time and WIP

By leveraging the Cycle Time and your WIP Limit, you can estimate when a card in you backlog will get done.

Kaizen - The spirit of continuous Improvement

Kaizen is Japanese for improvement or “change for the better”. In holding Kaizen events, organizations attempt to identify areas that are waste and how they can improve processes to deliver value to customers more quickly.

Key elements of kaizen

  • Teamwork
  • Personal discipline
  • Improved morale
  • Quality circles
  • Suggestions for improvement
