Acknowledgement

  • This National Blueprint has been made possible

through a financial contribution from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify factors that may cause people with

musculoskeletal conditions and arthritis to avoid disclosing their difficulties with the activity of driving.

  • Be able to determine the concrete actions

stakeholders may lead to support drivers with musculoskeletal conditions.

Background

  • Arthritis affects over 4.6 million Canadians of all

ages (The Arthritis Society, 2016)

  • Drivers with arthritis are at higher risk of car

crashes (Marshall, 2008)

  • Due to their medical condition, they may

experience pain, fatigue, decreased mobility, joint stiffness and decreased reaction time (Busteed,

Daly, Silke, & Molloy, 2004)

Association canadienne des ergothérapeutes Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists 6

Background

  • Issues affecting people living with arthritis have

been largely overlooked in the areas of research, training, practice and policy

  • No guidelines are available to support the

activity of driving for people with arthritis

  • Consequently, practitioners feel unprepared to

address this issue and drivers are afraid to report their difficulties for fear of losing their license

Background

  • The input of several professionals is instrumental

in addressing the needs of this specific population of drivers

  • For instance:

– an occupational therapist can help with finding an ideal sitting position and implementing car adaptations – a physiotherapist can help with regaining the physical strength to get in and out of the car – a pharmacist can assist with ensuring the optimal use of prescribed pharmacological treatment

Objective

  • Engage key Canadian stakeholders in the creation

and dissemination of a comprehensive and sustainable strategic action plan, the National Blueprint for Injury Prevention in Drivers with Arthritis

Association canadienne des ergothérapeutes Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists 9

Methods

  • It followed the methods

used to develop the National Blueprint for Injury Prevention in Older Drivers published by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) in 20091

Methods

The development of the action plan comprised of two phases

  • The data-gathering phase:

– a scoping review on driving and musculoskeletal conditions and arthritis – collection of input from the 15 members of the National Advisory Team

  • The consensus-building phase:

– rounds of document exchange (i.e. the Delphi method) – a free public conference – an in-person meeting – an external review process

– 15 experts and key stakeholders

  • occupational therapists with knowledge and experience in

driving rehabilitation and assessment (n=4)

  • representatives of not-for-profit organizations (n=2)
