Independent Living Independent Living includes individuals living in their own home or in a seniors’ community. Residents of independent living facilities care for themselves and live independently. They do not require assistance with day-to-day activities, but may use the services of a care provider as required, and can take full advantages of the amenities offered within a seniors’ living community.

By 2046, life expectancy is estimated to be 86 years of age for men, and 89 years of age for women.
  • Alberta Government, 2017
Based on the statistics and predictions above, we can expect a higher need for seniors’ shared living units. Both men and women are expected to live longer. In 2011, the majority of seniors (56%) lived as part of a couple; a higher proportion than a decade earlier in 2001 (54%). Approximately, 72% of senior men and 44% of senior women lived in a couple in 2011.
  • Statistics Canada, 2011
In 2018, life expectancy was estimated to be 79 years of age for men, and 84 years of age for women.
