Introduction

 Birth registration which is the compulsory recording of

birth events in accordance with the legal requirements of a country;

 Birth registration establishes who you are and gives access

to the rights and obligations of citizenship as well as providing measures for child health development;

 However, it imposes major threats in sub Saharan region

with lowest coverage rate ( around 47%) .

 In Rwanda, the process of strengthening civil registration

and vital statistics started in 2012;

 Some Initiatives were put in place to increase the

coverage & completeness in birth notification and registration;

 Currently more than 80% of birth were notified and more

than 56 % registered within the legal time;

 Although, significant regional differences were observed

at district level, and Rubavu were among the worst performer.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of parents on birth registration. Methodology: A mixed approach combining quantitative and qualitative were used on 397 parents and caregivers aged 18 years and 3 focus group. The study participants must at least have a children aged 5 years and less.

The adequate practice of birth registration in Rwanda is passed through the process of notification, verification and then registration and certification.

Conclusion & Recommendation

 Social demographics factors such as age of parents,

sex, education were impacted on birth registration practice.

 The study has revealed a strong association between

practice of birth registration and levels of parents attitudes.

 It has revealed also the negative association with

parents knowledge while it shows that the current awareness does not impact much.
