Towards Senior Learning Pathways

From Luke Wallace - Guidance Officer

OP to ATAR

  • Queensland has come into

line with the rest of Australia in terms of a common tertiary admissions rank system.

  • The new system commenced

for students who entered Year 11 in 2019.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

What are the key changes?

The new systems include:

  • A new senior assessment model that combines school-based assessment

developed and marked by classroom teachers, with external assessment set and marked by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA); and

  • A move from the current Overall Position (OP) tertiary entrance rank to an

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), as used by other Australian states and territories. SATE: Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance systems ATAR: Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank

slide-12
SLIDE 12
  • From 2020, Queensland’s standard pathway to tertiary entry, for Year 12 school leavers,

will be the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). ATARs will be calculated by QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre).

  • ATAR is calculated on a student’s best 5 General subjects or 4 General + 1 Applied

Learning Subject / Certificate III or higher Vocational subject.

  • Students require satisfactory completion of a QCAA English subject.
  • The ATAR will be expressed as a number on a 2000-point scale from 99.95 down to 0.00

in steps of 0.05 (ATAR under 30 will be recorded as 30 or below)

  • The ATAR will be used as a measure for Tertiary Admissions (Higher Education) and will

indicate a student’s position relative to other students.
