Call to Worship
(our ancient writings usher us into this ritual)
Why do we worship? Daniel 7:13-14
As I watched in the night visions I saw one like the Son of Man, Coming on the clouds of heaven. And He came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before Him. To the Son of Man was given by the Ancient of Days: Dominion and glory and kingship, That all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, His kingship is one that will never be destroyed.
The Lord be with you And also with you. Lifu up your hearts We lifu them up to God.
PSALM 2 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves The rulers take counsel together Against the I AM and Against His Anointed, saying “Let us burst Their bonds apart and Cast away Their cords from us.” He who sits in the heavens laughs The Lord thinks of them as a joke He will speak to them then in His anger He will terrify them in His fury, saying, “As for Me, I have set My King on Zion, My holy hill.”
I will tell of the decree The I AM said to me, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You Ask of Me and I will make the nations Your inheritance The ends of the earth Your possession You shall break them with a rod of iron You will dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.” Now therefore, O kings Be wise and Be warned O rulers of the earth Serve the I AM with fear Rejoice with trembling Kiss the Son! Lest He be angry and you’re destroyed along the way His rage is kindled in a flash! Blessed are all who take refuge in Him!

Heidelberg Catechism, Questions 41-44
- 45. Q. How does Christ’s resurrection benefit us?
- A. First, by His resurrection He has overcome death and so makes us share in the
righteousness He purchased for us by His death. Second, by His same power we are raised up to a new life. Third, Christ’s resurrection is a certain promise of our
- wn glorious resurrection.
- 46. Q. What does it mean when we say, “He ascended into heaven?”
- A. That Christ, before the eyes of His disciples, was taken up from earth into
heaven, and that He is there for our benefit, until He comes again to judge the living and the dead.
James 2:3-6 If anyone does not stumble in what he says He is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us We guide their whole bodies as well Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds They are guided by a very small rudder, as the will of the pilot directs So also the tongue is a small body part, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our body parts and can stain the whole body Setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.
Dear Father, Forgive us for not having control over our language and speech. We confess the sins of our mouths, the names we’ve called people who are different than us, the times we talked about other people’s sins, the times we cursed in anger or spoke too quickly. Forgive us for the word fires we have burned others with. Forgive us and put Your Spirit in our mouths and hearts. Give us new words of life, praise, encouragement, tenderness, and peace! In the Name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord! Praise Him with highest praise! What sort of church are we seeking God to make us? Acts 2:42-45 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.

Sermon (we hear from God)
John 18:28-19:16
28 Then they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the governor’s
- headquarters. It was early morning. They themselves did not enter the
governor’s headquarters, so that they would not be defiled, but could eat the
- Passover. 29
So Pilate went outside to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this man?”
30 They answered him, “If this man were not doing evil, we would not have
delivered Him over to you.”
31 “Take Him yourselves,” Pilate said to them, “and judge Him by your own
law.” The Jews said to him, “It’s not lawful for us to put anyone to death.”
32 This was to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken, to show by what kind of
death He was going to die. 33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to Him, “Are you the King of the Jews?”
34 “Do you say this of your own accord,” Jesus answered, “or did others say
it to you about Me?”
35 “Am I a Jew?” Pilate responded, “Your own nation and the chief priests
have delivered You over to me. What did You do?”
36 “My kingdom is not of this cosmos” Jesus answered, “If My kingdom
were of this cosmos, My servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But My kingdom is not from the cosmos.”
37 Then Pilate said to Him, “So you are a king?”
“You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered, “and for this purpose I was born and for this purpose I came into the cosmos—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”
38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”
Afuer he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in Him. 39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”
40 They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!”
Now Barabbas was a robber. 1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head and dressed Him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and hit Him with their hands.
4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to
you that you may know that I find no guilt in Him.”
5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe.
Pilate said to them, “Behold the man!”
6 When the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, “Crucify
Him, crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”
7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law He
- ught to die because He has made himself the Son of God.”
8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9 He entered
his headquarters again and said to Jesus, “Where are You from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 So Pilate said to Him, “You will not speak to me? Do You not know that
I have authority to release You and authority to crucify You?”
11 Jesus answered him, “You would have no authority over Me at all unless
