Section Formation � The first moves to set up the section were made in 1983 by Peter Clark of BHP (at that time still called Hematite Petroleum) � Bill Wells, who died in August 1991, was very active in getting things going - it was through his membership of the Kelvin Club that we began to hold our meetings here

Kelvin Club � 25 years of SPE meetings at the Kelvin Club � The Kelvin Club was formed on 31 October 1927, out of the former Fitzroy East Melbourne Bowling Club which was founded in 1865 � Because many of the members were engineers it was decided to name the new club after Lord Kelvin � In 1928 the Club moved to Collins Place in the city, and later to Canberra House, Bourke Street

  8. Kelvin Club � In 1945, during the Presidency of Sir Leo Curtis (later Lord Mayor of Melbourne), the Club purchased the present premises in Melbourne Place � In 1976 the Stock Exchange Club amalgamated with the Kelvin Club � Membership was opened to ladies on 14 February 1995

  9. Kelvin Club Building � The bluestone building was constructed in 1864 as a store house � 1870’s plumbers’ workshop � 1920s & 1930s: upstairs used for 3LO radio plays � 1939-1945 served as a soup kitchen and used by 3AW
