Heidelberg Catechism, Questions 51 and 52

• 51. Q. How does the glory of Christ, our Head, benefit us?
• A. First, by His Holy Spirit He pours out heavenly gifus on us, the parts of His body.

Second, by His power He defends and preserves us against all His and our enemies.

• 52. Q. What comfort is it to you that Christ will come to judge the living and the dead?
• A. In all my sorrow and persecution I lifu up my head and heart in eager expectation,

for the judge from heaven is the very same person who submitted Himself to the judgment of God for me, removing from me the power of the curse. He will also cast all His and my enemies into an everlasting judgment, but He will take me and all His chosen ones to Himself into heavenly joy and glory.

James 3:13-18 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom by good actions But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts Do not boast and be false to the truth. Dear Father, We do not boast in front of You and we do not want to be false to the truth. You know the selfishness inside us, the ambitions we sacrifice others for, the worldly evil wisdom we’ve believed, and the jealousies we excuse. We confess

• ur twistedness and rebellion, and our failures in Your face. Look on us with

Your mercy and do not count our crimes against us! Holy Spirit give us Your pure wisdom, Your sweet peace, Your harvest of goodness! Show Your power in us and make us a people of good actions from new hearts! For the glory of Jesus we pray, amen. Silence

Absolution

What does Christ promise us based on Isaiah 53? He was pierced for our rebellions We trust Your sacrifice for our crimes He was crushed for our twistedness We praise You for suffering for us On Him was the punishment that brings us peace We exalt Your wonderful grace By His wounds we are healed Who could imagine such a savior? All we like sheep have gone astray We did nothing to deserve such grace! We have turned—every one—to his own way So we surrender all of our ways to You The I Am put on Him the twistedness of us all So we praise and trust Your saving, cleansing, unstoppable love

Sermon (we hear from God) John 18:37-19:9

37 Then Pilate said to Him, “So You are a king?”

“You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered, “and for this purpose I was born and for this purpose I came into the cosmos—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to My voice.”

38 Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?”

Afuer he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, “I find no guilt in

• Him. 39 But you have a custom that I should release one man for you at the Passover. So do you

want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

40 They cried out again, “Not this man, but Barabbas!”

Now Barabbas was a robber.

1 Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged Him. 2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of

thorns and put it on His head and dressed Him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and hit Him with their hands.

4 Pilate went out again and said to them, “See, I am bringing Him out to you that you

may know that I find no guilt in Him.”

5 So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to

them, “Behold the man!”

6 When the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, “Crucify Him,

crucify Him!” Pilate said to them, “Take Him yourselves and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him.”

7 The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law He ought to die

because He has made himself the Son of God.”

8 When Pilate heard this statement, he was even more afraid. 9 He entered his
