Objectives:

  • To improve the organizational and managerial structure of production

through strengthening the organizational and managerial capacities of smallholders

  • To improve the quality of agricultural products and reduce post-harvest

losses through strengthening productive capacities in terms of production techniques, management and value addition

  • To increase the income of smallholders through the provision of appropriate

technologies for conservation and value addition Key activities:

  • Technology transfer through the set-up of a community centre (Centre of

Excellence) for conservation and packaging purpose in rural areas;

  • Skills development in the field of conservation, management, accounting and

certification process;

  • Dissemination of good practices, norms and standards at community levels;
  • Value addition through simple packaging methods (cutting and packaging)

Participating agencies:

  • National Coordination Office of the NTP on New Rural

Development: Program Management Unit

  • Vietnam Institute of Agriculture Engineering and Post Harvest

Technology (VIAEP): Implementing Partner

  • United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO):

Survey

  • Focus on major vegetable production areas in suburbs of Hanoi; collectors,

middlemen, etc. and individual customers thereof: Van Duc Commune and Cu Khoi, Gia Lam District; Thanh Da commune, Phuc Tho district; Van Noi commune, Dong Anh district, Yen Nghia commune, Ha Dong district and Dong Xuan commune, Soc Son district.

  • Issues to be addressed along the vegetable value chain of Hanoi: Unstable

distribution system of inputs materials, Small-scale production, limited Sub- harvest technology and techniques, Lack of harvesting tools, simple means of transportation, improper washing/cleaning methods, weak labelling & packaging, lack of pre-cooling & cold storage facilities, lack of preservation technology, limited written agreement/contract for product consumption.

Capacity building & skills development

  • Improved capacity & shared good practices for VIAEP’s experts by

Newzealand international expert.

  • Organized ToT and advance ToT: for 20 participants including chairmans of

vegetable production cooperatives, directors of vegetable companies, agriculture extension staffs, staff of plant protection sub-department, etc.

  • Organized TOEs: 300 farmers/households, retailers from surveyed vegetable

growing areas trained by TOT participants

Economically, application of knowledge and improved skills gained from training to the participants’ practical production has helped them to improve productivity and quality, therefore added value. Socially, through improved knowledge, skills and good practices, young participants have been encouraged to invest in vegetable production model or setting up business. This helps to creat jobs in rural areas and reduce immigration of youth to big cities.

Achievements from training courses

  • Dong Xuan Cooperative: post-harvest losses of root and fruit-vegetables

reduce to 10-15%, selling prices rise 15-20%; post-harvest losses of leafy vegetables reduce to 5-10%, selling prices rise and 7-12%. Improved packing and quality of the products led to increased number of contracts and shops/supermarkets: from 5 outlets (in 2014) to 18 ones (in 2015), and increased daily selling amount from 300-700 kg (in 2014) to 1,000-1,500 kg (in 2015).

  • An Viet High Technology Agricultural Products JSC.: post-harvest losses of

root and fruit-vegetables reduce to 5-15%, selling prices rise 10-30%; post- harvest losses of leafy vegetables reduce to 7-15%, selling prices rise 10-50%, for the products are counter-seasonal.
