School of the Incarnation Mission Statement

The School of the Incarnation embraces an inter-parish community of children with differing gifts. Through collaboration amongst the faculty, parents and other professionals, the School seeks to challenge and support a diversity of learning styles and needs and to nurture a spiritual, intellectual, physical, social and emotional wholeness in its students. With a commitment to professional and catechist development for its faculty and staff, the School of the Incarnation will continue to be grounded in a spirit of openness, rooted in Gospel values and to be attuned to the evolving pedagogy of education. Through instruction, faith formation and Gospel proclamation, students will be called to a greater understanding of their inherent responsibility, as Children of God, to actively participate in a global and technologically advanced society as instruments of justice in the world.

A note from the Principal . . . Dear Parents and Guardians: I hope that the Christmas holiday provided you and your family with the time to celebrate the gifts that you are to one

  • another. On behalf of the faculty and staff, I wish you a blessed New Year. We look forward to welcoming everyone back
  • n January 3rd with our celebration of the Epiphany and Three Kings Week! We invite you to close out the Christmas

Integrity, Initiative and Inclusion

This month we continue our focus on the values of integrity, initiative and inclusion. The life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King exemplify these values. His hard work and peaceful example forged the path of cooperation and equality.

Epiphany and Little Christmas at School of the Incarnation

Once again we have the opportunity to continue our celebration of the Christmas season as we follow the journey

  • f the Three Kings to Bethlehem. We will teach the children

about the traditions of our faith related to the Epiphany and the celebration of Little Christmas in other countries during Three Kings Week. Each day during the Morning Prayer students will hear about the celebration of Little Christmas around the

  • world. Three kings will visit the children throughout the

week, bringing gifts. Children will be asked to think about the gift that they can give to the Christ Child during the year ahead and place this gift in a special gift box at the end of the week. On Friday, January 6th we bless each classroom using a traditional Epiphany blessing used for homes and other

  • buildings. We will also celebrate the end of the Christmas

season with our Epiphany Band Concert on January 5th at 7pm in Marian Hall. We hope that you will join us! Keep Christ in Christmas Contest The Knights of Columbus sponsored a poster contest to support the “Keep Christ in Christmas” theme. We are very proud of all who entered! Yearbook News

Looking for a unique way to show your student(s) how proud you are of them for completing another successful school year? Place a recognition ad in the yearbook! Simply click on this link: Create Yearbook Ads to upload pictures and a personalized message in a predesigned layout. Ads for your student can be created from now until January 31st. Don’t miss out!

Reminder from Mr. Tommy’s

Please take a moment to review your child’s lunch account. It might be time to replenish the account since many accounts have negative balances. Thank you for your help with this!

Incarnation Fund Giving Appeal

Our 2016-2017 Incarnation Fund Appeal is still underway! If you haven’t yet made a donation, we hope you will consider doing so. What is most important is your participation! Many foundations want to know what percent of the school’s parents contribute to the annual fund before they will even review a school’s grant application. For this reason, it is your participation, not the size of your gift that is most important. The donations help to fund exciting programs not included in tuition! You can donate online by clicking the following link: Give to the Incarnation Fund or by sending a check to the school marked “Incarnation Fund.”

Employer Matching Gifts

Did you know that many employers will match your gift to School of the Incarnation? Your $250 gift could become $500

  • f financial support for our school! Toyota, Verizon,

Microsoft, and T. Rowe Price are just a few of the corporations which have matched parent donations to Incarnation.

Combined Federal Campaign

School of the Incarnation is an approved charity in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) which allows federal employees to contribute through payroll deductions to a participating non-profit organization. The CFC number for School of the Incarnation is 94557.

Open House

Our second Open House of the year will be held on Saturday, January 28th from 1-3pm. If you know someone who might be interested in a Catholic School education for their children, please make them aware of this event. Also, we are in need of parent volunteers to help with this event. If you can spare an hour that day, please email Laura Pajerowski at: LPajerowski@schooloftheincarnation.org.

Donate Used Cell Phones

If a new cell phone was under your Christmas tree, please remember to donate your used phone to our school. Proceeds from this recycling program benefit our school’s operating budget.

Reminder About Posting Pictures

At the start of each school year we distribute a talent release to all families asking for permission for the use of children's photographs, images and work. Some families ask that their child's image not be used in any way and as a school we abide stringently by that request. As a reminder, if families are taking pictures or video at school events we ask that you follow the same process of asking permission of families before posting pictures publicly or on any social media site.

Spelling Bee

What’s the buzz in middle school? Maybe it’s our upcoming Spelling Bee! Each middle school Language Arts class held its own spelling bee in December. The winner from each middle school Language Arts classroom will go on to compete in our school wide Spelling Bee in January. The overall school winner will go on to compete in the Anne Arundel County Spelling Bee in February.

DIBELS

Towards the end of January, the DIBELS assessment will again be administered to students in kindergarten through 3rd

  • grade. DIBELS stands for Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early

Literacy Skill and is one of the many ways teachers monitor their students’ growth and progress of literacy skills throughout the year. Students participate in the DIBELS assessment three times a year.

National Junior Honor Society

At our December meeting, NJHS members worked with Pre-K and Kindergarten students from ESP to make Christmas cards for the Giving Back program. Both the older and younger students seemed to really enjoy spending time together and the cards turned out beautiful! Thank you NJHS members for helping to share the Christmas spirit with others. Our next NJHS meeting is Monday, January 23 from 3:00- 4:00 in the Library. I look forward to seeing you there!

  • Ms. Tanisha Owens

Curriculum Coordinator Happy New Year! As a part of your New Year’s resolutions, consider working in some mindfulness to your life. A big part

  • f mindfulness is to do things with intent. Studies have shown

that just like in sports and schoolwork, what we practice intentionally in life we get better at. This is true of all we do,

Important News Guidance Corner Curriculum Corner

slide-4
SLIDE 4

and sometimes, we do not even know we are practicing

  • something. For example, if we “practice” worrying, we

worry more. If we “practice” rushing, we find we rush more. This is where intention comes in. Ask yourself as you start your day, “What do I want to practice today?” It can be simple like “I want to practice taking my time with tasks.” Or “I want to practice patience with myself and others.” Calling something like that to mind in the morning will help it to be in your mind throughout the day. In the evening, you can think about how you did. It is important not to be judgmental of yourself; remember and accept that you are human! The best part of this practicing thing is that you can do it with your children too. For small children, you can set their intention for them, “Today, let’s practice using kind words.” For older children, they may want to set their own, and you can ask them what it is (“Today I want to practice taking notes in all my classes.”). Then, at dinnertime, or at the end of the day before bed, you can ask them for some examples of living their intention, and share your own. Don’t worry if there are not many examples at first – the more your family practices practicing, the better they will get at it!

  • Mrs. Sarah Spaulding

School Counselor Thanks to all of you that joined us for our November HSA meeting! Over the next few months, I’d like to share some of the small group/student centered success stories that were highlighted on the slide presentation during that meeting. Many of our teachers have been focused on creating these learning opportunities for your children to be able to take a more active role in their own learning. This month I’ll focus on our primary wing. In our preschool and kindergarten classes, learning lends itself to complete interaction through play situations where children learn so many aspects of physical, mental, and emotional growth. However, there are some really unique activities happening too. The children are using the iPads to scan QR codes which link them directly to a story that they can then listen to – all done independently and with choices of stories to listen to. A “CAFE” board can be found in many of our 1st and 2nd grade classrooms. You won’t find French fries on the menu, but you will find reading strategies! CAFE is an acronym for Comprehension, Accuracy (knowing words), Fluency, and Expand vocabulary. As a teacher introduces a new strategy, (back up and re-read), the strategy is written down and placed under the corresponding skill (comprehension). Teachers conference with students one to one and together they decide which strategy that particular student should focus on for a period of

  • time. That student, then, knows that when they are reading that

they should focus on using that particular strategy to become a stronger reader….ownership of learning! Also at the primary level, students begin to make choices in regards to which books they’d like to read along with making choices about how to use their time most productively. The Daily 5 or “D5” is a series of rotations which I had mentioned earlier this year - Read to Self, Read with a Partner, Word Work, Work

  • n

Writing, and Listen to Reading. During these rotations, teachers and assistants are working with small groups or continuing to conference with individual students. These rotations are done in conjunction with the curriculum, but applied in a variety of ways where, again, children have

  • choices. Students’ academic skills are not only strengthened

but they also begin to understand time management!

  • Mrs. Cheryl Shoots

The HSA would like to thank our School of the Incarnation Families for their involvement and participation in our community events in 2016. New Family Referral Program

Our current Incarnation families are by far the best ambassadors for spreading the word about our school! Our New Family Referral Program rewards current families with a one-time $250 tuition credit for referring a new family who applies and enrolls. Here’s how it works:  If you know of a family that you believe may be interested in School of the Incarnation, complete the “New Family Referral Form” below and submit to the school office.  Reach out to the family and share your experiences at School of the Incarnation. Share with them the reasons you have chosen Catholic education and why you think they should do the same. Let them know that you have or will refer their information to the school and that an admissions representative will call or email them to provide more information.  For each new family that applies and enrolls at least one full-time student, a $250 tuition credit will be awarded to the current referring family after the new student has been in attendance for 30 days.  Siblings of current students and previously enrolled students do not qualify as new families. Staff members are not eligible for the referral credit.  Note that this form must be on file in the front office before the new family has contacted the school on their own for information or to visit so it is best to submit the form as soon as possible after speaking with the new family. In other words, the referral form is not retroactive and you are not eligible for the referral if the family contacts school before the referral.  This referral program is open to all families with students currently enrolled in PreK4-Grade 8.  Families may earn no more than one referral fee in any academic year.
