 Is it a word that students are not likely to know?  Is this a word that would be used by a mature language user?  Is it a frequently used word?  Is it a word that is generally useful?  Is it necessary for comprehension?  Can the meaning of the word be explained using every-day

language?

 Is it a “cross curricular” term?

If you can answer yes to most of these questions, then it is likely that the word is a tier 2 vocabulary word.
