Why set up a mentoring service?

As a Qualitative Researcher, I became aware that the need of mothers with children that had complex needs were not being met… Case accounts – from two mothers Mother A Bengali – Aged 25-30, born in the UK – first child WS560090.WMA Mother B Polish – Aged 35-40 born outside the UK WS560082.WMA All the mothers said the same thing – that it would have been good to have someone to talk to, someone who could understand their worries…

The impact of our work and where to next?

What do these case studies tell us?

  • That the needs of mothers are often missed – because the focus is quiet rightly on the baby

with complex needs What’s the impact of our work so far?

  • By highlighting the mothers need for emotional support we have influenced PNMH

pathways - locally and regionally (East of England), to be mindful of this cohort

  • LPCF’s work has helped to empower mothers to support other mothers who are at the start
  • f their child’s SEND journey

What next?

  • To role out a targeted workshops with a view to inform decision making, prevention and

early intervention relating to high risk relationships and complex genetics conditions

  • To use our evidence to support commissioners to buy in more Psychological Wellbeing

Practitioners (PWPs) who can support this cohort better sooner. ▪ Extreme prematurity ▪ Hydrocephalus ▪ VP shunt ▪ Chronic lung disease ▪ Retinopathy of prematurity ▪ Myopia and squint ▪ Reflux ▪ Sensory issues ▪ Cerebral palsy ▪ Autism ▪ Learning difficulties
