❏ Today Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Pakistan, Nepal make up India. ❏ The main rivers of in India are the Ganges, Godavari, Krishna, Narmada. These rivers are stepping stones for india’s development. ❏ The Himalayas (the tallest mountains in the world) separate the Indian subcontinent. ❏ The Indian subcontinent can be divided into two places the northern plains and the Deccan.

More Geography

❏ The cause of all the monsoon’s in India is because of the Himalayas. When heavy rains comes through the country it can't get through the himalayas, the mountain is to high for the rain to past. ❏ So all that water washes down and becomes a monsoon. ❏ When the other time of the year the same thing happens on the other side of the mountain. ❏ The monsoon is still very important for the economy. It helps farmers grow their crops because half of the year they don’t have any rain.

Harappan Civilization

❏ Three of the largest and most important countries were Harappa, Lothal, Mohenjo-Daro. ❏ People from these places used the same language which has not been deciphered. ❏ Harappa was a very developed country they had weavers, potters, metalworkers, traders and farmers. ❏ When the Harappan civilization began they put it at the top of the mounds made from mud and rocks.

❏ At about 1500 B.C the Aryans migrated into the Indian subcontinent. ❏ The word Aryans means noble. ❏ At first the Aryans kept herds and lived in family tribes that were ruled by warrior chiefs. ❏ After they upgraded and were farmers. ❏ The Arians broth there language to India this language was known as Sanskrit. ❏ Many languages today have Sanskrit roots. ❏ The Aryans had a big impact on Indian religion, it was the Vedas, this built the base of the Aryan religion. ❏ The word Vedas means knowledge.

❏ Brahism came from the Vedic religion. ❏ Hinduism evolved by the Aryans religion: Buddhism. ❏ 14% of the people in the world's population are Hindu. ❏ Hinduism is the third largest religion which is after Christianity and Islam. ❏ A very important fact in Hinduism is that people and animals have souls. ❏ The most important gods are Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva. ❏ This is the creator, preserver, and destroyer.

Difference between Buddhism and Hinduism

Buddhism 1. Did not focus on the cast system 2. Did not focus on god's 3. Buddhism followed the eightfold path to get to nirvana. Which is technically Heaven in Buddhism 4. Buddhism was open to to any cast Hinduism 1. Focus on the cast system a lot and were very strict that once you are in a certain place of the cast system you cannot change. 2. They believed greatly in a big assortments

Siddhartha Gautama

❏ In 563 B.C the buddha was born, Siddhartha Gautama, prince. ❏ The Legend is that the buddha was born with no harm around him. ❏ He never knew death, sickness, and morning. ❏ When he found about these three things he went to find a place where there was perfect enlightenment. ❏ He spent twelve years teaching enlightenment. ❏ Then he became a teacher of religion. ❏ By the time he died in 483 B.C the religion was very popular. ❏

The Maurya Empire

❏ Chandragupta Maurya formed a very well organized empire. ❏ Chandragupta was a cruel ruler. ❏ In the 300s B.C he his empire wrote a book called the Science of Material Grain. ❏ With hisd very strict rules the empire grew even more. ❏ In 297 B.C Chandragupta gave his kingdom to his son. ❏ HIs son, Ashoka was also one of the greatest rulers in India.

Ashoka and the Gupta Empire

❏ Emperor Ashoka was a very good warrior he lead his men into battle and almost united all of India. ❏ He also extended the maurya empire into what is today Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. ❏ After he conquered the Kalinga empire he became a very peaceful man. ❏ In 232 B.C Ashoka died. And the Maurya empire fell apart. ❏ A few years later the Gupta empire emerged. ❏ From the beginning to the end of the Gupta Empire was known as the Golden Age.

How the New India still Needs the Old

❏ Today four of India's main religions are from the pass and religion is a big part of India's economy. With no religion in India there would be no caste system, no development, and no peace for the country. ❏ The achievements were very important too. If it wasn't for the Hindu Arabic Numerals there would not be a very good math system. And you you need nath for everything. It's better to have good math than bad math. ❏ The golden age made India what it was today. ❏ India's great Irrigation techniques helped the economy a lot. ❏ India grew cotton and today they still do some people know how to spin the cloth and sell it for a good price. Cotton from India is one of the best selling fabrics from India.
