What Is Idea Management?
What is Idea Management?
Idea management is a structured process for soliciting ideas from employees, capturing those ideas and evaluating them in order to determine which ideas have the greatest potential to add value to the organization.
I have an Idea!
Anybody got any ideas?
What is an Idea ?
Nothing more nor less than a new combination of old elements.
A new idea is the result of fresh thinking, and it solves a problem. A new idea is a novel notion that fuels tomorrow’s success. A new idea anything that propels our business and professional lives.
So, What’s an Idea?
Where Do New Ideas Come From?
1. Lateral thinking. 2. Optimal visioning. 3. Mind-brain interfaces. 4. The neurophysiology of thought. 5. Mental permeability. 6. Conceptual fusioning.

1. An evaluation matrix is an ideal initial evaluation tool. It includes a set of criteria (five is best) against which each promising idea can be measured. 2. When a set of ideas is evaluated by a team of experts, you get a detailed scorecard of the best ideas. 3. More detailed SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunity, threat) analyses – this will provide a more detailed of each idea’s market potential. 4. Ideas which pass these initial evaluation ‘gates’ can then move
business case development, project initiation.
Creativity does not become innovation until the ideas have been implemented. Unfortunately, many organizations go to great trouble and expense to generate and evaluate ideas, but then fail to implement them! Thus it is important that your idea management initiative includes methods for testing and implementing ideas.
One Last Note!
The History of the Suggestion Box
1770 by the British Navy for listening to every individual without fear of
likely to be punished by hanging). 1880 at William Denny & Brothers shipyard in Scotland to collect ideas from all employees and to pay a ‘fair’ reward for each implementable idea. 1892 NCR became the first US company to implement a company-wide suggestion program developed by John Patterson their infamous CEO. Employees complained that there was no point giving ideas to their supervisors as the best ideas to their supervisors as the best ideas were stolen, and the worst ideas used as a pretext for their dismissal.
