Social media meets info lit outcomes in many courses • So everyone can be more effective at finding information they need – Using varied search tools – Using effective key words and search terms – Evaluating finds for usefulness – Saving ‐ storing finds for later use – Expanding and translating IL skills between classes, jobs, life – Teaching concepts of online privacy

  6. Social media supports learning in a wide range of courses • Business Writing • First Year Composition • Poetry • Argumentation • Anthropology • Nursing • Literature

Advantages of using social media • Already in use in daily life for some people – means a life long learning skill • May avoid library anxiety • Expands critical thinking for evaluation since not pre ‐ vetted as library materials are • Expands citation skills since not so obvious how to cite • Provides search ‐ storage ‐ sharing

Challenges of using social media in a class • Providing digital access for students without internet or computers • Creating an account for each software if one doesn’t already have it • Or combining established accounts with classroom activities • Learning how to search and save on each site – Instructor needs to know as much as students – Investment in time and energy • Creating student ‐ private ‐ community sites • Helping students protect their privacy – one of the IL Proficiencies

Students learn social media skills for business and WordPress blogs • to share their research • Composition students use Reddit to research their argument papers Food writing students share recipes, restaurant reviews, and • farmer’s market finds on a class Facebook page. • Critical Reviewing students online will use Pinterest to share art exhibit reviews Poetry students use Twitter to create and send short poems • • Students in an African American literature class use Tumblr to share images related to the texts and concepts they are studying One grad student archives recipes on Pinterest so she can check her • phone to make dinner • Argumentation uses Pinterest for the study of audience and visual rhetoric.

Pinterest and Audience • Because Pinterest is assumed to be a mostly female social media site, it is a great place to talk about audience. • What makes a pin more effective? • How do we cater an image to a certain group? • What language can we use to attract this audience? • Are there things in the website’s design that indicate this audience?
