  5. Definitions • Homograph • BundlingDomain Names • Homophone • Tonos • Greeklish • Dialytika • AliasedName • Katharevousa • NameAliasing • Dimotiki

  7. ProposedCharactersforRegistrations OnlyMonotoniccharactersareallowed! Monotoniccharactersareusedtodayinthespellingof • Greekwords. Polytonic charactersforTLDregistrationofferno • significantadvantagefortheaverageuser. ThisrecommendationstandsonlyfortheGreekTLDs; • registriesareencouragedtodecideupontheuseofthe polytonic charactersintheirpolicyforthelowerlevels. 7

  8. IssuesConcerned Thesigmaandfinalsigma σ σ (small,U+03C3)e.g.α σ πίδα(shield) • • Σ (capital,U+03A3)e.g. Σ οφία(femalename) Σ • • ς (smallfinal,U+03C2)e.g.τέλο ς (end) ς • • but… IDNA2003: σ <4> Σ <4> ς (e.g.θησαυρός– treasure) • θησαυρός → ΘΗΣΑΥΡΟΣ → θησαυροσ → → notcorrectGreek! notcorrectGreek! IDNA2008: σ and ς aredifferentacceptedcharacters, • treatedseparately– reversemappingnopossible! 8

  9. IssuesConcerned,Cont. TheIDNAapproachoftranslatingGreekwordsinto domainnames .ελλάς ελλάς (.xn44hxarsa0b)smalllettersform . • • .ελλας ελλας (.xn44mxahsa0b)misspelledwithoutthetonos . • • .ΕΛΛΑΣ . ΕΛΛΑΣ(. .ελλασ ελλασ) ) (.xn44mxahsa5b)capitallettersform • • inIDNA2008uppercaselettersaredisallowed– however an applicationmaymapthemtoallowedcharacters but… atypicaluserexpectstotypethedomainnameinuppercaseand lowercaseandendupatthesameresult,asithappensinASCII thus: aword(orstring)withoutatonosshouldbeaddressedasvariant 9

  10. IssuesConcerned,Cont. Homographs • 4 ΕΕΤΤ(greek/capital)– EETT(latin/capital) εεττ (greek/small)– eett (latin/small) 4 Αθήνα– Αθηνά → ΑΘΗΝΑ Homophones • lotto– λοττο (orλοτο) 4 Greeklish • 4 Αθήνα → Athina /A8ina/A8hna 10

  11. IssuesConcerned,Cont. Registrationscontainingthetonosaccent • themajorityofthewordsinsmalllettershavetohavethetonos accentoveroneofthevowelstobespelledcorrectly adomainwithoutthetonosisconsistingofthelettersofthe uppercaseformofthedomainname, ifthefinalsigmaisnot present manydomainnamesrepresentwordsandtheuserwillexpect themtohavethetonosaccent Registrationscontainingthefinalsigma • theuseofthefinalsigmaisessentialforthecorrectspelling of theGreekwordsandmalenames 11

  12. IssuesConcerned,Cont. Whatshouldbeconsideredas ? avariantofalabelrepresentingaword(accentedbytonosin smallletters’form)couldbethesamewordincapitalletters, sincethecapitallettersarenotaccented, thevariationofagivenwordinKatharevousaandDimotiki, themonotonicandthepolytonicformoftheword, accentedandnot4accentedformsofaword/string, thevariationofaword/stringretainingthefinalsigmaatthe exactrequestedpositionbetweentheonewhenthefinalsigma (ς) isreplacedbythemiddlesigma (σ), variationscreatedbychangingcaseaword/stringfromsmallto capitalletters,accordingtotheGreekgrammar 12

  13. ProposedSolutions– TheVariantsProposal Acceptedcharacters:small,monotonic,including • characterswithtonos,dialytikaandtheircombination Thedomainnamewillbeacceptedattheexact • requestedform Thesamedomainwillbeallocatedtotheregistrant, • strippedoftheaccentmarksandfinalsigmas,ifany (variant1) Thesamedomainwillbeallocatedtotheregistrant, • strippedoftheaccentmarks,retainingthefinalsigmas, attheiroriginalpositions(variant2) 13

  14. ProposedSolutions–TheVariantsProposal,cont. Alternativepositioningofthetonosaccentisnot • allowed Alternativepositioningofthefinalsigmaisnotallowed • Alternative,samemeaningwords,arenotallowed(if • thedomainnameconsistsofwords)– itisthe “Katharevousa vs.Dimotiki” issue.Theapplicantwill onlychoosetoregisteroneandtheothershouldbe excludedfromregistration Twooptionsforhandlingtheallocatedvariants: • theyentertherootzoneasDNAMEs • theyaretreatedasFQDNs • 14

  15. ProposedSolutions– SmallCharactersProposal Acceptedcharacters:small,monotonic,including • characterswithtonos,dialytikaandtheircombination Theonlyacceptedformofthedomainnameistheform • thatisoriginallysubmittedbytheapplicant,withthe specifictonos’ positionsandthepossiblefinalsigmas Thesameform,strippedofaccentsisnotallowed • Thesameform,strippedoftheaccentsandwithany • combinationofsigma/finalsigma,isnotallowed 15

  16. ProposedSolutions–SmallCharactersProposal,cont. Alternativepositioningofthetonosaccentisnot • allowed Alternative,samemeaningwords,arenotallowed(if • thedomainnameconsistsofwords)– itisthe “Katharevousa vs. Dimotiki” issue.Theapplicantwill onlychoosetoregisteroneandtheothershouldbe excludedfromregistration 16

  17. Recommendations Takingintoaccount: theadvantagesanddisadvantagesofeachproposal • theaverageinternetuser’sexperience,needsand • expectations thecurrentprotocols’ statusandtechnology’s • limitations TheGreekCaseStudyTeamrecommendsasthe mostappropriatesolution theVariantsproposal 17
