Center of Studies on Information and Founded in 1933, UNIFESP Communication Technologies ¡ was exclusively for Health Sciences, but in 2005 became multisubject with The Brazilian Internet Steering six campus, over than 36 Committee (CGI.br) coordinates and programs. ¡ integrates all Internet service initiatives in Brazil, as well as promote technical quality, innovation and the dissemination of the services available. ¡

Methods ¡ • Data ¡collec@on ¡performed ¡from ¡February ¡to ¡August ¡2013. ¡ ¡ • The ¡sample ¡comprised ¡Execu@ve ¡and ¡ICT ¡Directors ¡(CEO ¡and ¡CIO), ¡ physicians ¡and ¡nurses ¡ ¡ – It ¡was ¡excluded ¡isolated ¡clinics, ¡mobile ¡units ¡and ¡establishments ¡with ¡ non-­‑physician ¡and ¡non-­‑nurses. ¡ ¡ • The ¡selec@on ¡was ¡by ¡probability ¡sampling ¡technique ¡considering ¡ the ¡country ¡region ¡and ¡the ¡type ¡of ¡establishment ¡(outpa@ent, ¡ diagnosis ¡and ¡therapy ¡services, ¡inpa@ent ¡up ¡to ¡50 ¡beds ¡and ¡ inpa@ent ¡with ¡more ¡than ¡50 ¡beds) ¡ – private ¡and ¡public ¡facili@es. ¡ • The ¡research ¡project ¡was ¡approved ¡by ¡the ¡Ethical ¡and ¡Research ¡ Commi\ee ¡of ¡the ¡Universidade ¡Federal ¡de ¡São ¡Paulo ¡(UNIFESP) ¡ – informed ¡consent ¡to ¡all ¡par@cipants. ¡ ¡

Instruments ¡ • Two ¡ques@onnaires: ¡ – the ¡first ¡with ¡43 ¡ques@ons ¡was ¡applied ¡to ¡the ¡ CEOs ¡and ¡CIOs ¡inves@ga@ng ¡the ¡infrastructure ¡and ¡ implementa@on ¡of ¡ICT ¡in ¡the ¡facility. ¡ – the ¡second, ¡with ¡37 ¡ques@ons, ¡was ¡applied ¡to ¡the ¡ physicians ¡and ¡nurses ¡to ¡understand ¡the ¡adop@on ¡ of ¡ICT ¡in ¡their ¡daily ¡du@es. ¡ ¡

Data ¡collec:on ¡ • Both ¡ques@onnaires ¡were ¡applied ¡by ¡ Computer ¡Assisted ¡Telephone ¡Interview ¡(CATI) ¡ • 8% ¡of ¡healthcare ¡facili@es ¡were ¡also ¡selected ¡ to ¡apply ¡face-­‑to-­‑face ¡ques@onnaires. ¡ ¡

Results ¡ • The ¡ques@onnaires ¡were ¡answered ¡by ¡1,685 ¡ execu@ves ¡and ¡ICT ¡directors, ¡1,484 ¡physicians ¡ and ¡2,696 ¡nurses. ¡ ¡ • ICT ¡infrastructure: ¡ – 94% ¡of ¡the ¡healthcare ¡facili@es ¡use ¡computers ¡ – 91% ¡are ¡connected ¡to ¡the ¡Internet ¡ ¡ Note: ¡this ¡scenario ¡is ¡similar ¡to ¡what ¡occurs ¡on ¡the ¡ Brazilian ¡enterprises ¡where ¡97% ¡with ¡10 ¡or ¡more ¡ persons ¡employed ¡have ¡Internet ¡connec@on ¡ ¡

Results ¡ • 41% ¡facili@es ¡have ¡a ¡dedicated ¡ICT/Health ¡Informa@cs ¡ Department ¡ • 52% ¡ ¡have ¡the ¡pa@ent ¡record ¡as ¡paper-­‑based ¡and ¡ electronic. ¡ • Administra@ve ¡data, ¡iden@fica@on ¡and ¡demographics ¡ informa@on ¡are ¡the ¡most ¡available ¡and ¡used ¡ • 60% ¡of ¡facili@es ¡using ¡Internet ¡provide ¡the ¡laboratory ¡ test ¡results ¡electronically ¡ • 52% ¡-­‑ ¡all ¡informa@on ¡regarding ¡to ¡the ¡admission, ¡ referral ¡and ¡discharge ¡are ¡also ¡electronically ¡available. ¡

Results ¡ • Clinical ¡informa@on ¡was ¡less ¡available ¡ – vaccines ¡taken ¡by ¡the ¡pa@ent ¡(21%), ¡allergies ¡ (36%), ¡pa@ent's ¡vital ¡signs ¡(26%), ¡notes ¡on ¡the ¡ clinical ¡care ¡(42%) ¡and ¡nursing ¡notes ¡(26%). ¡ ¡ – clinical ¡informa@on ¡systems ¡with ¡alerts ¡and ¡ reminders ¡about ¡drug ¡interac@on ¡(22%), ¡dosage ¡ (21%), ¡allergies ¡(22%), ¡drug ¡interven@on ¡on ¡ laboratory ¡tests ¡(20%) ¡and ¡contraindica@ons ¡ (20%). ¡ ¡

Results ¡ • among ¡facili@es ¡using ¡Internet ¡in ¡the ¡last ¡12 ¡ months, ¡22% ¡carried ¡out ¡distance ¡educa@on ¡ – 19% ¡performed ¡distance ¡research ¡ac@vi@e ¡ – 25% ¡teleconference. ¡ ¡

Results ¡ • Individual ¡use ¡ – 99% ¡of ¡the ¡physicians ¡and ¡nurses ¡are ¡Internet ¡users ¡ – 89% ¡of ¡physicians ¡access ¡Internet ¡daily, ¡with ¡increased ¡ use ¡among ¡younger ¡people ¡ • 97% ¡is ¡up ¡to ¡35 ¡years ¡and ¡78% ¡is ¡51 ¡years ¡or ¡more ¡ – Nurses: ¡86% ¡of ¡Internet ¡users, ¡with ¡no ¡significant ¡ difference ¡in ¡the ¡age ¡groups. ¡ ¡ • The ¡availability ¡of ¡the ¡Internet ¡at ¡the ¡healthcare ¡ facility ¡encompasses ¡72% ¡of ¡nurses, ¡80% ¡of ¡which ¡ comes ¡from ¡the ¡private ¡facili@es. ¡ ¡
