Friedensreich Hundertwasser was born as Friedrich Stowasser on December 15, 1928 in Vienna.

Influences
Even in adolescence Stowasser brought home reports from school saying that he had an "exceptional feeling for color and form". While Hundertwasser did attend a few Universities, he felt like he'd gain a better understanding of the world through travel. He changed his last name in 1949 and his first name in 1960.

Developing His Style
After traveling a bit and attending a few Universities for a short period of time, Hundertwasser took his cues from the Viennese Jugendstil and developed a style all his own. The Viennese Jugendstil, or the Vienna Succession, was made up of a group of artists that wanted to change art. They added more color, a TON of pattern, and wanted to create a close link between art and nature. Gustav Klimt was the leader of this movement.
