COVID-19 personal protective equipment when working in health and care settings

  • Fluid resistant surgical masks should be used when working in an

environment with individuals that have confirmed or possible COVID-19 if having physical contact with someone in that environment gloves and an apron should be used in addition to the fluid resistant surgical mask.

  • In particular cases, if there is a risk of splashing then eye protection will

minimise risk.

  • New gloves and apron must be used for each episode of care, however,

fluid resistant masks and eye protection can be worn continuously until you take a break. Do not dangle your mask or eye protection around your neck.

COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)- Disposal

  • It is essential that used personal protective equipment is stored

securely within disposable rubbish bags.

  • These bags should be placed into another bag, tied securely and kept

separate from other waste within the room. This should be put aside for at least 72 hours before being put in the usual household waste bin for disposal. (Managers will need to decide if a risk assessment needs to be completed for this dependent on individual circumstances EG where the bags will be stored.) Please put a sticker with the date when the bag can be disposed

frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water

use

  • Remove outside the persons room, cohort area or 2 meters away from the

person with possible/confirmed COVID-19

Face mask

  • See table on slide 6 for guidance on weather to wear a fluid resistant

surgical mask or a surgical mask. When selecting the appropriate mask please pay attention to packaging to ensure you have the correct one as they may look similar.

  • Before putting on a mask, ensure you are hydrated, tie hair back, remove

jewellery and clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps

between your face and the mask. Press thin metal strip gently against the bridge of your nose and extend to cover your chin.

  • Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with

alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

Face mask continued

  • Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use

single-use masks.

  • To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of mask);

discard immediately as clinical waste; clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub

  • r soap and water. Fluid repellent surgical mask and eye protection can be used

for a session of work rather than a single person contact. Ultimately, where staff consider there is a risk to themselves or the individuals they are caring for they should wear a fluid repellent surgical mask with or without eye protection, as determined by the individual staff member for the episode of care or single session. If someone you are supporting has symptoms of or confirmed coronavirus they should wear a face mask when in communal areas and on transport if possible.
