How to Avoid Spreading Lice

  • Avoid Head to Head Contact (sports, playground, slumber

parties, camp, selfies)

  • Do not share clothing or stuffed animals (hats, scarves,

coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, barrettes)

  • Do not share combs, brushes, or towels
  • Common sense: Don’t hang out on an infested person’s bed

What to do When Your Kid Gets Lice

  • Don’t freak out, don’t be embarrassed
  • Check everyone
  • Focus on the Head
  • Don’t waste time or money on cleaning your house top to

bottom

  • Do not use fumigant sprays

  • Soak brushes and combs in hot water (130°F) for 5-10

minutes

  • Wash linens and clothing used in last 2 days
  • Science: 5 minutes at >128.3°F
  • Items that cannot be laundered can be dry cleaned or put in

a plastic bag for two weeks

How to Look for Lice

  • Dandruff shampoo if possible; conditioner or leave-in

conditioner

  • Brush wet hair, comb it back; use detangler
  • Use Nit-Free Terminator Lice Comb or similar product
  • Comb entire head
  • Pay special attention to the hair at the nape of the neck and behind

ears

  • Use paper towels to wipe the comb clean during combing
  • Viva Brand

  • Only takes two minutes
  • Comb with lice comb (no enzyme)
  • Cover entire head – every square inch
  • Rinse comb in bath water, paper towels not needed unless you suspect
