HSS022: Advanced English Presentation & Discussion (Edu 4.0) MTWTh 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM N4, Room 1116(TBA) 2:0:1 Holly Wang (hollyw(at)kaist.ac.kr) 042‐350‐4691 Course Packet (provided on KLMS) ★ Course Goals By the end of this course, students will be expected to be able to: • Lead a small group discussion • Actively take part in a small group discussion • Make 3‐4 minute informative, persuasive, group, and poster presentations • Create clear, effective visual supplements for spoken presentations • Evaluate presentations and give constructive feedback ★ Course Description : This course is designed to help students develop their public speaking skills. Through active participation in small group discussions, students will learn to explain and support their opinions in preparation for formally presenting them in front of an audience. They will then learn to deliver and evaluate short presentations in a number of formats. ★ Objectives To achieve the goals, student will: • Prepare topics from content pulled from periodicals, media, and/or personal experiences • Organize the data from these sources to fit speaking time restrictions • Ask follow‐up questions for clarification or additional information • Demonstrate how to build audience rapport through eye contact, body language, and proper use of voice • Demonstrate ability to organize presentation content into clear sections • Give, receive, and apply feedback for individual and group presentations ★ Course Content Presentations All students will give four presentations throughout the semester. One will be a group presentation and the rest will be individual presentations. I will provide more detailed information regarding these presentations are worth 60% of your grade in this course.

  2. Homework After giving the first presentation in class, students will be asked to watch their own presentations and write a reflection discussing the two strengths and two weaknesses. Each point should include specific examples from the presentation and if discussing weaknesses, student should include how to improve in those areas. After the first reflection, students should also discuss their improvements or any changes in their presentations as the semester progresses. On second and third presentations, each student will have a partner on presentation day. After watching his/her partner, the student will give feedback on the partner’s presentation: two strength and two weaknesses. The feedback should also contain specific examples from the presentation and a discussion of how to improve those areas. This will be part of the written homework as well. Unless otherwise stated, all reflections are due at the start of class on the date specified. You must submit a printed copy in class. No late submissions will be accepted. All written assessments must be formatted using the following specifications: • 12pt Times New Roman; • Double spaced; • 1” margins; • Your name, student ID number, the class code (HSS022) and your section (H/F/J) ★ Class Participation Students are expected to participate in class discussions, giving feedback, and all other activities. Discussion will be part of the daily class work and the effort shown in actively contributing to small group discussions will go toward your participation grade. I expect you to attend class daily, come on time, and stay for the full class period. You must have all materials, participate in discussions, actively listen to your peers, and take notes as necessary. On presentation days, all students will be asked to give feedback of speakers’ presentations. Remember, feedback is not all negative; it is important to make note of the positive aspects of a speaker’s presentation as well. Also keep in mind that a speaker deserves our undivided attention. If you arrive late for class on a speech day, and someone is presenting, please be courteous by remaining in the hallway until the student finishes his/her speech. Quizzes: Students will take quizzes throughout the semester. Students must provide documentation in order for absences to be excused. Students will be marked tardy/late after the first 10 minutes of class. Students arriving more than 15 minutes after the class has started will be considered absent. Three or more absences will result in failure of the course. Academic Honesty: All work submitted to this class is expected to be the original work of the student whose name appears on it and the work was prepared originally for this course. Academic dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, unauthorized collaboration, falsifying academic records, and any act

If there has been any academic dishonesty in preparing for the assignment, you will receive a zero for that particular assignment. Late Assignments: All assignments have to be completed on time. Late assignments will not be accepted. If a student is absent on presentation day, he/she will be expected to present at the beginning of the next class. In all cases, extensions must be applied for via email before the due date and should be supported with appropriate documentation (medical certificate, etc).
