Pastoral Pondering

Today, we are told that the Holy Spirit rested on Simeon, a man described as “righteous and devout,” and that he was guided by the Spirit into the temple where he identifies Jesus as the Messiah, at the ceremony in which Jesus was presented in the temple by his parents. Simeon describes Jesus as “a light for revelation to the Gentiles” and” the glory of your people Israel.” Later in the same story, we have the Prophetess Anna also recognizing Jesus as the one who would redeem Jerusalem. What this story tells us is that each and every

  • ne of us has a purpose or plan for our lives that is not of our own making; it

comes from God! This vocation is sometimes recognized by others who help us to see that vocation in ourselves and are there to support our positive response to the grace that God wants to give us to accomplish God’s particular plans for us. It is the Holy Spirit which is the source of that acknowledgement and which inspires us to live up to the vision which God has for our lives. This is one of the justifications we have for bringing babies to be baptized in the Church. It is an acknowledgment of their parents’ wish that the Holy Spirit enable them to be good parents in raising their children to believe in the Christ and that one day, their children will, of their own free will, seek to serve God in whatever capacity the Lord has planned for their lives. A pastoral pondering as we celebrate the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple.

Practice of Faith People come into our lives who may have prophetic purposes, but we may not realize it at the

  • time. This happened to Mary and Joseph as they

presented Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem. There they found Simeon, a “righteous and devout” man, who proclaimed the significance of Jesus’ birth and mission. God also placed there the prophetess Anna, who declared the same to all who would listen. As you contemplate the happenings of each day in prayer, consider how God has placed your loved

  • nes, friends, and coworkers in your life as

testimony of God’s love for you. Remember the internal and external messages that you heard throughout the day that were filled with goodness, truth, and beauty, for these are from God.
