  1. Case Study Presentation 1 HSC 4664 – Fall 2017 Health Communication Case Study Presentation (70 points total) Assignment Overview For the final project for this class, you and one partner (pairs) are expected to conduct a case study presentation. Your case study will demonstrate health communication concepts and principles as studied and discussed throughout the course term. Your case study presentation will be similar to the presentations given by graduate students in the class throughout the semester. Purpose of the Assignment The purpose of the case study presentation is to challenge you to apply what you have learned in class to address a real-world health communication problem. Additionally, the assignment may serve as one of the pieces you use to show potential employers; or, for those students eligible to graduate with honors, the case study presentation may be placed in an Honors Portfolio. The case study presentation will highlight your communication and analytical skills, as well as knowledge gained from the course. Details of the Assignment First, you will find a case related to a health communication issue. You must choose a topic from the list I have provided below. Your case study will be a persuasive product, intended to prescribe how communication should take place in a given context to ensure accurate, balanced, reliable and consistent health messages that promote shared meaning and understanding across diverse populations and cultures. Therefore, you will be advocating for a certain perspective. Think of the assignment as a “best practices” proposal, prepared from a health communication perspective. Outline of Assignment Content Your case study must contain the following elements:  Introduction / Summary: Provide an introduction to the case that summarizes what the case study is about and why you are presenting the case (i.e., what is the problem you are addressing?)  Background / Problems: Provide general background information on the particular case you are presenting and the related issue you are addressing. You must give enough information to allow the audience to gain an understanding of the facts and also that demonstrates your expertise on the case / subject. Here, consider your audience as one that is not well-versed in health communication issues. Your job is to outline the communication issue and propose a solution. Note: Make sure that you stay on topic – don’t digress from the main subject – and make sure that you don’t propose problems for which you cannot provide solutions.

  2. Case Study Presentation 2 HSC 4664 – Fall 2017  Communication Principles and Messages: What communication principles and/or messages are demonstrated in the case (both implicit and explicit)? What communication principles and/or messages are lacking? The missing principles and/or messages are important because they may explain why your analysis is accurate and your suggestions are needed. Note: You may find some other industry guidelines available in government health agencies.  Recommendations: After explaining the case, background on the issue and problems, propose your solution – what do you recommend to help solve the issue presented? This must be based on communication principles (e.g., theories we have studied, concepts discussed) and the additional research you have done.  Illustrative Example: As part of your recommendations section, include at least two examples of how your recommendations might work. This must be two of the following: (1) a short description of a real-world case in which this solution was put in place, (2) an existing health communication campaign, OR (3) a hypothetical case you have drafted yourself. Note: If you have another idea for an example, please discuss it with me so that I may approve it.  Conclusion: Your conclusion should wrap up your presentation and provide clear take- away point(s). What was the purpose of your case study? What was the problem? And, what are your recommendations to address the problem? Think of this question: What do you want the audience to remember, if they remember nothing else?  Sources: Throughout your presentation, you should mention your sources. At the end of your presentation, include one slide with a list of sources (references). Use APA style for in-text citations and references. This is the most commonly used citation style in our field. If you are unfamiliar with APA style, you can use quick guides provided by the Purdue Online Writing Lab available at: https://owl.english.purude.edu/owl/section/2/ .  Script: In the notes section of your PowerPoint that you will submit online for grading, you must provide the script for your presentation. The script must be written in complete sentences, free of spelling errors and typos and grammatically correct. Possible Topics More than one team may be working on the same issue / case – that ’s OK. The way in which you define and expand on the topic is up to you. I am willing and available to discuss this with each of you. If you have an idea for another topic you’d rather do for the case study, please let me know ASAP so that I may approve it. To be clear, you need to choose an issue and one of the cases I’ve listed (or another you might be aware of) as a basis for your presentation. Note: You must inform Dr. Rodgers of your topic by end of class (2:45 p.m.) on Thursday, Oct. 19. Issue Cases (choose one [1] as basis for your presentation)  An Extended Stay Patient-Provider Communication  An Insulin Overdose  Locked In  Confidentiality and Air Force One

You need to look for reputable sources that can give you some insight as to the different aspects of your topic, as well as help you formulate your recommendations. Once you have selected your issue and case study, begin with the source I have provided, and then go on to look for more information. You are required to cite at least five (5) trustworthy sources in your presentation. This may include scholarly texts, academic articles, trade publications, and other expert insight. You may not use Wikipedia or general news articles as your main sources. In fact, do not cite Wikipedia at all. You may include news articles as secondary sources; however, news articles will not count as one of your required five (5) sources. You may also use news and magazine articles as your illustrative example, but you still need five (5) expert / trustworthy sources. You may only use blogs if they are written by experts in the field. You need to go to the author page and evaluate their credibility. I am available to help you identify good sources for your presentation and help you evaluate the sources you have found. Don’t be shy about asking for help.

  4. Case Study Presentation 4 HSC 4664 – Fall 2017 Presentation Format You will present your case study to the class at the end of the semester. PowerPoint is the only acceptable format for your presentation (i.e., no Prezi, no Haiku Deck, etc.). I strongly recommend that you write a script before you create your slides. You will be graded partly on your organization and clarity. A script will assist you in these criteria. Your presentation must include all of the sections outlined above. However, you should allocate time carefully because your presentation cannot go over 10 minutes. I think most of your time should be spent on explaining the problem you are tackling and your recommendations. Here’s an outline of the parts of your presentation and the time you should dedicate to each part:  Introduction / Summary: 30 seconds (just say who is in your team and what your presentation is about)  Background / Problem: 1-2 minutes  Communication Principles & Messages: 1-2 minutes  Recommendations: 1-2 minutes  Illustrative Example: 2 minutes  Conclusion: 1 minute  References: 5-10 seconds (just show the list)  Q&A: 2-3 minutes (Q&A will not count as part of your time allotment) Remember, you need to submit a script with your PowerPoint. In-class presentations will take place Nov. 28, Nov. 30 and Dec. 5. Note: The order of presentations will be done by random selection before Thanksgiving break. PowerPoints must be submitted on Canvas by or before 11:55 p.m., Monday, Nov. 27. Note: This deadline applies to all students, regardless of order of presentations. This deadline is my effort to ensure fairness so those students who present later do not receive additional time to complete the assignment and / or change the assignment based on early student presentations.
