History

  • In 2003-2004, the rank regulation was reviewed and the

current system was implemented for the Class of 2006 and thereafter.

  • As more students and colleges requested weighted grade

point averages (GPA’s), the quality point system was extended to generate a weighted GPA.

Reasons for Update:

  • Create transparency in the ranking process.
  • Currently rank is calculated ONLY one time in the fall of the

senior year. The weighted GPA is being requested as early as ninth grade.

  • The current quality point system creates an extremely high

weighted GPA. This is not in line with the weighting in surrounding districts.

  • Need to include International Baccalaureate (IB) courses in the

regulation.

Comparison to Current Rank

Current Updated

  • Level II (Electives) and

Level III (Regents) courses will not have any quality points added.

  • Rank will be generated

for students in Grades 10, 11, and 12 each September.

  • Level II (Electives) do

not have quality points

  • added. Level III

(Regents) courses have quality points added.

  • Rank is generated in

September for Grade 12

  • nly.

Current

  • Rank is reported numerically for the

top 50% of the class only. Percentiles are used for the remainder of the class.

  • Current transcripts report only an

unweighted GPA.

  • Seniors must have earned 15.5

credits in order to be ranked with their cohort.

  • IB courses are not included.
  • Quality points assigned to each level:
  • Level 2: Electives: 0 pts
  • Level 3: Regents: 5 pts
  • Level 4: Honors: 10 pts
  • Level 5: College: 15 pts
  • Level 6: AP/IB: 20 pts

Updated

  • Rank will be reported numerically for

all students with a weighted GPA of 80.00 or higher.

  • Report an unweighted and weighted

GPA on transcripts.

  • Seniors must earn 15 credits in order

to be ranked with their cohort. Grades 10 & 11 will be ranked with their cohort regardless of credits earned.

  • IB courses will be Level VI (equivalent

to AP courses).

  • Quality points assigned to each level

will be:

  • Level 3: Regents & Electives: 0 pts
  • Level 4: Honors: 3 pts
  • Level 5: College: 6 pts
  • Level 6: AP/IB: 9 pts

Goal

  • Re-calculate the weighted GPA in order to be comparable to

surrounding districts.

  • Continue to have the valedictorian be the student who takes

the most rigorous courses and earns the highest grades.

Phase In Process

  • Transcripts will report both a weighted and unweighted GPA.
  • Rank will be calculated in September of 2012 using the

current quality point system for students in Grades 10, 11, & 12.

  • Starting with the 2012-13 school year, and thereafter, all

courses will be weighted using the updated quality point system.

  • For the Class of 2017 the updated quality point system will be

fully implemented.

In Addition :

  • The High School profile will be revised each year.
  • An early graduate that is eligible to be ranked as a senior will

need to have the weighting of their courses on their transcript changed to match the cohort they will be graduating with.
