  3. Welcome To Haslett Middle School The middle school years are a time of great growth, change, and development. At HMS our students have Viking PRIDE Prepare – Prepare for high school and beyond ✓ Respect – Respect everyone and celebrate differences ✓ Integrity – Do the right thing even when no one is watching ✓ Decide – Make positive decisions ✓ Engage – Engage in both curriculum and school culture ✓ 3

  4. Mornings at HMS Attendance is a critical part of being a successful student at HMS. This includes arriving to school on time and ready to learn. Breakfast is served starting at 7:20 ✓ 6th grade students will start their day in the south gym ✓ and are dismissed to go to their lockers/ classes at 7:30. Classes start at 7:40 ✓ ◌ Students who arrive near 7:40 must check in at the office. 4

  6. THe Middle School Philosophy At HMS, we employ a grade level team philosophy. This means that students on a specific team will all have the same 4 core (math, science, lang. arts, social studies) teachers. Benefits of teaming : Increased teacher and parent communication ✓ Better teacher and student relationships ✓ Coordination of planning and curriculum ✓ Two 6 th grade teams: 61 and 62 6

Viking Time Viking Time is a brief 20 minute period , similar to homeroom, where students work with an assigned teacher to take care of school initiatives, business, and work on academic and non-academic skills. Viking time builds unity in the school building, promotes Haslett pride and teaches good behaviors and work habits. 7

Exploratory Classes Exploratory options for 6 th Exploratory classes grade students include: provide students with the Band ✓ opportunity to explore Choir different content, ✓ STEAM interests, and experiences. ✓ Forensic Science ✓ Physical Education ✓ Robotics ✓ Computers ✓ Spanish ✓ Art Exploratory classes provide ✓ Navigation Station real-life and hands on ✓ application of content learned in core classes. 8

  9. Switching CLasses Students attend 6 classes each day 1st hour – Core 2nd hour – Exploratory 3rd hour – Core 4th hour – Core Lunch (30 min) Viking Time 5 th hour – Exploratory 6 th hour – Core

Sports in 6 th Grade Clubs at HMS We have Yearbook Cross Country ✓ ✓ found that Science Wrestling ✓ ✓ students who Olympiad Track and Field ✓ Builders Club Intra-mural ✓ are involved PALS Basketball ✓ ✓ in a club or Student Council Volleyball ✓ ✓ Musical/Tech ✓ sport feel Other sports are offered Crew connected and through Haslett be nice. ✓ Community Education or Gay/ Straight ✓ are successful Meridian Township Parks Alliance and Recreation here at HMS. Conservation ✓ club Clubs & Sports 10

  12. Electronic Devices At HMS our focus is on learning and reducing distractions. Therefore, students should have all electronic devices powered down and stored in their lockers during the school day.

Dress Code ● Shorts and skirts must be thumb-tip length or longer Shirts without sleeves must be three fingers wide on the ● shoulder ● No bare mid-drift ● Pants must be worn on the hips or waist No hats or hoods inside the building ● No clothing that has advertisement of alcohol, tobacco, ● or has double meaning ● Overall appearance should be neat and modest 13
