Welcome to Exeter College. We are pleased that you will be joining us in September and we look forward to meeting you soon. Thank you for viewing our 'Headstart' presentation. The aim of Headstart is to help you get to know more about Exeter College and to equip you with important information to help you make a confident start to your time here. Ordinarily, we would invite you in to College for a Headstart meeting, to have a tour

  • f the site, meet some of the staff and familiarise yourself with the facilities.

Unfortunately, due to the worldwide pandemic, we are unable to do this at this stage. We look forward to meeting you in person, but until then the following slides will guide you through some key information about beginning your journey at Exeter College. 1

This is an example of the letter you will receive with all the information for enrolment.

This is an example of an enrolment invitation letter that we have used in previous years. Due to current government guidelines, things are likely to be different this year, but until we have a clear picture we will not be able to let you know exactly what this will look like. Please be assured that we will that we will be following all government and health guidelines and we will let you know as soon as possible, and in plenty of time, how the enrolment process will work. The letter will let you know where and when you need to attend and any items you will need to bring with you. Please make sure that you let us know of any changes of address or email and if you are using an email you were given at school, you need to update this to a personal

  • ne as some schools may remove those email accounts over summer.

Be aware of updates and please keep these safe so that you will have all the information you need. 3

Enrolment- What? Where? When? Who?

Where will I go? Who will I meet? What will happen next? GCSE results day- what if you don’t get what you wanted?

The letter will tell you where you need to go for enrolment; you can use google maps if you are unsure how to get there and you will see pictures in the later slides to help you recognise the buildings. You may find it useful to have the presentation on your phone so that you can use it when you come in for enrolment. When you arrive to enrol there may be a lot of people around. You can ask any member of staff (wearing blue 'Exeter College' tops) to help you know where to go. You may be asked to go to a SEN interview before your main interview, this is to discuss any learning needs that you may have to ensure we support you during your time at college; the staff there will help you get to your subject interview afterwards. At your subject interview, you will likely meet a member of staff from the faculty you will be joining. In some cases, the person you meet may be your future tutor. You will usually work your way around the building so that you can pay any fees, have your picture taken for your college ID, join the student union etc. This may be different this year but you will be well informed about how things will work. If at any point you are unsure of where to go, please ask a member of staff. Don't panic if you didn’t get the results you wanted- the staff at your subject interview will help and advise you. 4

GCSE Results

Enrolment Days Induction Days 1st Day ED

These dates could change-please be aware of updates.

Here is a likely calendar of events - GCSE results day is set to be on 20th August. The enrolment days are between 21-28 August, you will only need to come in on one day and your enrolment letter will tell you when you need to come in. The purpose of the induction days is to enable you to come in and get to know the rooms, students and staff you will be with for the year. Each department does this differently. The first day of teaching is due to start on the 7th of September. 5

LRC intro and 1:1s 9- 12 12- 1 1- 1.30 1.30-3 Friday 6th September Your tutor will decide what to do during this time- it may be something to help introduce you to your subject or may be team building exercises. Lunch. Fresher’s fair. You will travel with your tutor to the fair and return with them afterwards. Tutorials and 1:1s

This is an example of what may happen on induction days- each department does things differently. Some of these activities, such as the all faculty introduction and the freshers fair, are likely to be quite busy. If you feel this might be too busy for you, please speak to your tutor. The tutorials and 1:1 sessions give you the chance to get to know your tutor group and have time to talk with your tutor. This is a good opportunity to speak to your tutor about any learning needs you may have and what has helped you in the past. The freshers fair gives you the opportunity to join groups that may be of interest to you and to see the variety of clubs you can access. 6

Tutorials. Tutorials may be similar to those you had at secondary school. Here is an example of the things you may cover in these sessions. Some of these may be carried out on a 1:1 basis throughout the year so that the tutor can check in with you and make sure that everything is going well. 7

Student eILP.

This is an example of what the eILP (electronic individual learning plan) looks like. Here you can access your timetable and calendar and view your absence percentage. You can use the eILP to report if you aren't able to come to college. You will need to select from a number of reasons given and record the dates you will absent. This is the process you need to follow to report your absence and it is best to do this as soon as possible. The information will be added to your attendance record. The eILP can be accessed through tablet, computer or phone. 9

Assistive Technology

  • We use a range of different apps

and software at the college and recommend students to use the different features that may help them with their work.

  • You may want to download some of

these before the academic year starts to give you a good start.

The apps and software we use have many different accessibility features that can help in a number of different situations, here are some examples. Office Lens on most phones enables you to take pictures of printed text and 'immersive reader' can read this text aloud to you. Office Lens can also let you take pictures of printed text and turn them into editable word documents. This is useful for many tasks, for example you can complete handouts on your phone. On computers, the 'immersive reader' feature in Word can read word documents out so that you can listen to it- this is really useful for proofreading. Word also has speech to text option so you can use this instead of typing out your work - this is great for note taking and capturing ideas. Outlook is where your Exeter College emails will go- you will need to check it

  • regularly. This also has 'immersive reader' to read out any attached word documents.

OneDrive is where you can save and organise your documents and have access to them from college, home, or on the move. Another app that some of the teachers use in OneNote, where teachers can share resources and you can also use to keep and organise notes your way. All new students will have an assistive tech workshop to attend with their tutor group so you can see it in action. 10

LRCs- Learning Resource Centres

Learning Resource Centres (or LRCs) are learning areas that you can use to study. In the LRCs you can use your own computer, borrow a laptop to use, or use one of the desktops available. You may find that some of your lessons take place in an LRC. As well as the computers, each LRC has a library with books related to the subjects that take place in that building. As well as physical books, Exeter College has an online library you can access by using your college ID and password. Each LRC has members of staff to give technical assistance or help if you have issues with borrowing items or logging on. Some of the LRCs have access to additional resources, for instance, the LRC in the CCI building has camera equipment which can be loaned out to students who need it. Most LRCs also have useful items and even phone chargers you can borrow if your battery is low. LRCs are open every day and on some days they have later opening hours so you can use them if you have some extra work you want to do. 23
