ASSESSING DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS OVER THE YEARS

¡ We have tested and trialed many different types and

makes of tools over the years, documenting our experiences

¡ Husqvarna, STIHL, Dewalt, EGO, Echo, Milwaukee,

Oregon, McLane, etc. ¡ Trialing both residential and commercial grade

equipment

¡ Goal is to make a ‘data driven decision’ and select one

manufacturer for all electric landscaping equipment, slowly phasing other brands out

ELECTRIC LANDSCAPE EQUIPMENT (PROS & CONS)

Advantages

¡

Less noise pollution

¡

Fewer CO2 emissions associated with landscaping work

¡

Positive PR associated with equipment

¡

Reduces fuel consumption and storage of fuel

¡

No need to pull choke on equipment, less wear on shoulders

Challenges

¡

‘Different’ than what staff are used to

¡

‘Appearance expectations remain the same with a less powerful tool’

¡

Battery run-time limits usability and use for certain projects

¡

Not a direct replacement for all traditional landscaping equipment

¡

When working remotely, must bring extra batteries

  • r charge

FUNDING SUPPORT

¡ Santa Barbara Air Pollution Control District does not currently

provide funding support for electric landscaping equipment

¡ UCSB’s The Green Initiative Fund

¡ 2018/19 - $20,403 for electric landscaping tools, will use to build

  • ut suite of tools from one manufacturer after assessment

¡ 2013/14 - $7,487 for a lithium-battery powered lawnmower

¡ Department Support

¡ Student Affairs – $2,293 to purchase a suite of EGO brand tools for

groundskeeper to utilize in area.

BIO-BASED LUBRICANTS

¡ NV Earth Bar & Chain Bio-Based Oil ¡ Used to lubricate chain on chainsaw when

  • perating

¡ Most B&C oil is left in the environment

during/ after work

¡ U.S. Forest Service recommends using bio-

based bar and chain oil when possible

slide-13
SLIDE 13

BIO-BASED LUBRICANTS

¡ NV Earth 2-Cycle Bio-Based Engine Oil, exclusively used on

all small landscaping equipment

¡ Engine temperatures are at or below levels when running on

NV Earth 2-Cycle Bio-Based Engine Oil compared to petroleum based lubricants (see tables and graphs on next slide)
