Registration Process For students currently not attending one of our YRDSB schools (home schooled, Catholic, or private school) and who live within the Emily Carr boundary area:  Registration packages may be picked up starting tomorrow in the Main office.  Once completed packages are returned to the Main office, you will be contacted in semester 2 for a group or individual meeting lead by one of our administrators to better inform you about our expectations.  If necessary a follow up meeting with a guidance counsellor and/or a SERT may be required.

  7. About ECSS We are a semestered school:  4 courses from September to January  4 courses from February to June  Each semester ends with an exam week and an exam review day

  8. A Typical Day  4 periods per day  75 minutes each class  Currently 1 common lunch – 1 hour in length  School hours: 8:10 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.

  9. Full Time Student Status  Students are required to carry a full-time course load.  Grade 9, 10, & 11 students carry eight courses.  Four in each semester with no study periods.  Grade 12 students carry a minimum of six courses (three in each semester).

  12. 18 Compulsory Credits 4 Credits in English (1 credit per grade) 1 Credit in French as a Second Language 3 Credits in Mathematics (at least 1 in Gr. 11 or 12) 2 Credits in Science 1 Credit in Canadian History 1 Credit in Canadian Geography 1 Credit in the Arts 1 Credit in Health and Physical Education .5 Credit in Civics and Citizenship & .5 Credit in Career Studies (grade 10) Plus………..

Compulsory Credits (cont’d) Plus: Group 1 : 1 additional credit in English, or French as a Second Language, or a Native Language, or a Classical or an International Language, or Social Sciences and the Humanities, or Canadian and World Studies, or Guidance and Career Education (including Learning Strategies), or Cooperative Education* Group 2 : 1 additional credit in Health and Physical Education, or Business Studies, or the Arts (music, art, drama, Native Studies), or French as a Second Language or Cooperative Education* Group 3 : 1 additional credit in Science (grade 11 or 12) or Technological Education (grades 9-12), or French as a Second Language or Computer Studies or Cooperative Education*

  14. A Minimum of 12 Optional Credits Optional Credits (a.k.a. Electives) • Allow you to custom build your educational program depending on your chosen destination.

The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test - OSSLT  Administered in the Spring of the grade 10 year  A test based on language and communication (reading and writing) expectations of curricula up to and including grade 9  Preparation sessions in grades 9 and 10  If unsuccessful in first attempt, schools will provide remedial support; test is re-administered until student successfully completes the test or the Grade 12 Literacy Course

Community Involvement  A diploma requirement  Complete 40 hours before graduation  Can start the summer after grade 8  Completing more may qualify you for graduation scholarships based on community involvement  Consider activities that will enhance your personal résumé  Requires prior approval  Student responsibility to keep record of activities  For a list of eligible activities please refer to the YRDSB website at http://www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca/communityinvolvement or the Guidance link of the ECSS website for details and form to be completed.

  21. Math is Different • Crossing over from applied to academic in Math is not necessary because both pathways may lead to the most intense grade 12 university Calculus and Vectors if you wish. • The only difference is that the academic pathway is shorter by one course.
