2 Enabling effective use of open data by building the capacity of stakeholders to understand the potential

  • f open data for agriculture & nutrition and to engage

with it practically

Open data as a solution

GODAN Action works along thematic topics

  • to focus on domains of high relevance, where the

impact of open data is foreseen to be substantial

  • to put research into practice and achieve impact
  • to develop an approach that is portable
  • Climate and weather data: Open data as a catalyst for

business development and capacity development

  • Land data: Localization and privacy, and grass roots to

aggregator impacts

  • Nutrition data: Data interoperability for nutrition

Standards & interoperability

  • Supports data publishers and intermediaries

– To engage with standards for optimal reuse – To encourage co-development of added value services

  • Comes with a helpdesk for open data

publishers, intermediaries and end users

  • Currently piloting

– Helping specific projects and initiatives with the implementation of standards and the improvement of interoperability

Impact evaluation

  • Covers all stages of an open data initiative
  • Specifically aimed at open data in a

developing context

  • Applied in open weather data cases (Ethiopia

and Bangladesh, 3 case studies)

  • Impact narratives
  • Short term: awareness, better project

designs

  • Long term: sustainable open data ecosystems

Capacity Building

  • Face-to-face training

– 200+ trained so far, train the trainer approach – Mini-grants to catalyse uptake

  • On-line course (MOOC)

– Low level, highly scalable and adaptable – 1000+ trained so far

  • Clear signs that this is broadly taken up

locally

– Including linkage to interoperability and impact evaluation

SLIDE 7
  • Catalysed the networking and the forming of

partnerships

  • Allowed building critical mass on open data in

existing networks

  • Advanced the thinking on open data and engaging

with open data

  • Has lead or contributes to numerous new

initiatives

  • Allowed us to contribute to creating impact
  • Feeds into activities of Wageningen UR data

competence centre
