  1. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT General Information  The Bachelor of Science Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Behrend College offers a this 3-6 credit internship course for those students entering their senior year in the major. This course is MET 495 and is structured to provide students an opportunity to experience the job performance expectations placed on professionals with the modern industrial environment. This industrial work experience is very valuable and provides both the sponsoring company and the senior many benefits. The senior is expected to complete approximately 120 hours for completion of the proposed project(s), and is expected to perform this work during the summer months.  This internship course is open to MET seniors . The GPA requirement has been removed.  Normally, students that are successful in the course substitute the 3 credits earned for the internship for their Senior Design Capstone course.

  2. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Requirements for Entry  Student must have senior standing  Course prerequisites must be fulfilled (i.e. IET 216, MET 210W, MET 306, MET 320,and MET 330).  Need an Employer that agrees to Behrend’s MET495 guidelines.

  3. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Getting an Internship  Nittany Lion Career Network (NLCN) is the primary online resource for connecting students with employers.  Standard services includ e Job Postings and Leads/Prospects  Free to all PSU students  Use your PSU ID and password to log in  Students have access to postings from all PSU campuses  Can search by major, job title, full time, part time, internship, and/or geographically  Saved searches that will run as often as you want and notify you via e- mail of job postings that match to your search criteria  Want help or want to know more, contact Academic and Career Planning Center (ACPC) at 898-6164  Currently, 30 internships listed on NLCN that specifically request MET’s. LORD, Beaumont Technologies, Pointwise, Otis Elevator, Bell Helicopter, PPG, Honda,  Elyria and Hodge Foundry

  4. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Procedure  The senior applies for and conducts internship employment interview(s).  Senior discusses possible projects with the interested company  Student should have copy of INTERNSHIP AGREEMENT FORM (IAF) worksheet when discussing with employer or potential employer  Projects should be of the nature that would help prepare the student to enter the field of engineering  Examples of projects are applied design, computer analysis, systems engineering, cost analysis, manufacturing problems, or other engineering preparation activities  Activities such as drafting or laboratory technician support are not acceptable  Decision Making position

  5. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Procedure continued  Senior completes the IAF  IAF available on SoE and Mr. Nitterright’s website  Use form to complete online application. Student must complete online submission by second Friday in June  Mr. Nitterright and Mr. Evans review the IAF and either approve or reject.  Try to ensure success  Student may reapply (before 2 nd Friday in June)  Once approved, the student is registered for the course by SoE office personnel  Student must pay for the class as a summer internship  Cannot be rolled into the spring or fall tuition

  6. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT

  7. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Confidentiality Issue  Student may and probably will be asked to sign Non- Disclosure Agreement (NDA) and that is okay.  Behrend’s School of Engineering does not permit faculty to sign an NDA for internships.  Recourse, if your company is requiring faculty to sign an NDA to view your summer work:  Have your company determine if your project(s) will really need one.  See if you can have your presentation reviewed by your company before giving it to the MET faculty, so that they may edit out proprietary information.  Keep in mind that you must be able to share enough information so that the MET faculty viewing your presentation can determine if you mastered the material and met the course requirements.

  8. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Internship  Work on projects at the company  Record your daily work  Email weekly work completed to Mr. Nitterright  Include digital photographs (compressed file format)  Once per week on Friday afternoon  Complete online assignments (ANGEL)  Prepare for 20 minute presentation that will be given in the first few weeks of the fall semester  Presentations are given to MET faculty  Students receive a DF grade for the summer semester. After their presentation is graded the grade will be changed.  Enroll in MET480 for the fall semester (this is a requirement)

  9. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT  Grading

  10. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Where some students have gone wrong  Embellishing their IAF  Stating they would use Advanced Strengths when they only used MCHT213  Doing the work but presenting it poorly Discuss what you needed to do and the specifications   Discuss what you did Discuss the benefits of your work  Using the excuse, “this is what the company has always done.”   Not doing sufficient engineering work  Company stated the student would work on a project(s) that were approved on the IAF but project(s) never came to fruition Worked on a team and the engineering work was performed by someone else   Comes out in the presentation did not master the subject matter  Did not read ALL the information, including the syllabus, available in ANGEL Did not fulfill the 120 hour requirement of engineering and engineering related activities 

  11. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Internship  Grading  Internship Presentation 40%  Internship Notebook 10%  Industry Supervisor's Evaluation 20%  Faculty Supervisor's Evaluation 10%  Assignments 20%  Total 100%  Benefits  MET495 can be substituted for MET485 (Senior Design Project)  If student fails the pass/fail portion of grading but passes the course, then the student may use MET495 to substitute as a Technical Elective  Spring semester of your final year has a lighter load  Help with job search  A must to graduate at the end of the fall semester  Valuable industry experience  Cold Cash

  12. Mechanical Engineering Technology MET 495 - INTERNSHIP FOR CREDIT Academic Contacts  Mr. Ed Evans, MET Chair  email: ere100@psu.edu  Mr. Fred Nitterright, Supervising Faculty  email: fxn101@psu.edu  http://www.personal.psu.edu/faculty/f/x/fxn101/
