  2. What is Geary Rapid and what happened to Geary BRT? Geary Boulevard Geary Rapid Improvement Project 34 th Ave to Stanyan Stanyan to Market 2

  3. We’ve been busy making major improvements New low-floor buses More frequent service Safety enhancements Red lanes downtown 3

  4. Not just on Geary, but for all of Muni

  5. Additional service has provided relief % of 38 Rapid peak hour trips where passenger loads exceeded capacity 14% 15% 10% 10% 38 Rapid service 5% increase from every 5.5 minutes to every 4 minutes 0% Apr. '14 - Mar. '15 Apr. '15 - Mar. '16 Source: Automated Passenger Counter (APC) data: January 2013-June 2016. Average # of crowded trips between 6-9am inbound and 4-7pm 5 outbound, excluding August 2014 which showed 0.0% crowding, likely in error. Crowding – passenger loads exceeding capacity.

  6. And our customers are noticing “Thank you for the bus lanes!” “I like the new buses. They have I like the new buses. They have more room more room and are cleaner .” and are cleaner. “38 bus improved immensely within the last 3 years”

  7. But, more is needed High ridership (~54,000/day) is a blessing and a curse » More frequent service  harder to prevent bus bunching » Geary riders experience crowded buses, uneven wait times and inconsistent travel times Gaps in service regularly cause Geary riders an additional 5+ minutes wait time Typical Extra Wait Total Frequency for daily Wait Due to Gaps Wait commuter 38 4 mins 5 mins 9 mins 2x/week 38R 2 mins 5 mins 7 mins 1x/week Source: SFMTA AVL 1/2013 to 6/2016, peak hours, Presidio Ave to Market 7

  8. But, more is needed SF’s longest High -Injury Corridor » Geary travelers are eight times more likely to be hit by traffic than the city average 8

  9. Muni Forward key investment opportunities » Operators » Vehicles » Schedules » Line management » Right-of-way

  11. Major project features Dedicated bus New signals + lanes crosswalks Pedestrian bulbs, Better bus stops median refuges Smarter traffic Calming the “expressway” signals

  20. Intercept survey: background » Conducted March 2017 b/w Stanyan and Market » Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday » >1,400 valid surveys 20

  21. Intercept survey: key findings 90% of those intercepted had come by 68% transit (55%) or walking (35%). of those intercepted AND had seen red lanes believed they were helping improve Geary bus service. Transit riders and walkers reported visting businesses ‘daily or weekly’ more often than drivers . 21

  22. Project benefits and tradeoffs Benefits Tradeoffs • • Faster more reliable transit trip Decrease in # of travel lanes • • Safer street Small reduction in on-street • More comfortable bus stops parking • • Optimized traffic flow with state- Some temporary disruption of-the-art signals while construction occurs 22

  23. Who will benefit? Geary customer demographics Low Income People of Color # % # % 38 15,000 57% 15,000 58% 38R 11,000 47% 15,000 57% SFMTA System wide On-Board Survey, 2014 23

  24. On Geary and rail… 24

  25. Next steps » New SFMTA-led Citizens Advisory Committee in formation - recruitment beginning in June » MTA Board environmental actions » Complete federal environmental process » Major outreach push » Then MTA Board legislation, complete design, and begin implementation 25
