Schoonhoven | Richard Serra | Elisabeth Vary | Jan Wawrzyniak | Peter Wegner The centerpiece of Galerie m Bochum’s booth at Art Basel is the installation Relatum – Meditation by Korean artist Lee Ufan (*1936, lives and works in Japan and Paris). Three steel plates are set up like a folding screen to form a stage for a shimmering reddish-hued standing boulder. The irregular angles at which the three plates meet generate varying relationships between the interim spaces, the surroundings and the stone within, while the juxtaposition of steel and stone with their fundamentally different material qualities and origins creates a compelling contrast. The result is a space that calls into play an experience that goes beyond mere seeing. The gallery will be devoting a large solo exhibition to Lee Ufan’s work in the autumn of 2014. Characteristic individual works by Arnulf Rainer, Gotthard Graubner, Francois Morellet and Richard Serra form a classic counterpoint to more recent paintings by Caroline von Grone, Alfredo Alvarez Plagaro and Antje Dorn. For the first time at Art Basel, Galerie m Bochum will be presenting a work by Qiu Shihua (*1940 lives in Shenzhen and Peking). The Chinese artist has had two solos shows in Germany to date, at the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern and at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. The landscape silhouettes that gradually emerge on the canvas evoke associations with both traditional Chinese landscape painting and European styles from Romantic to contemporary. By contrast, the intensely colored abstract landscapes in Antje Dorn’s (*1964, lives and works in Berlin) series Milkyway, 2012, are imbued with an atmosphere of lighthearted whimsy. Colorful geometric or amorphous forms stand out against a monochrome ground in a kind of close-up view. Their apparent interactions and mutual influence turn the individual elements into protagonists in their own unique abstract world. From the American artist Peter Wegner (*1963, lives and works in Berkeley, California), white-on-white paintings will be on view that conjoin poetic fragility with formal rigor. Wegner’s work ranges from book objects, to works on paper and paintings, all the way to complex installations. His floor sculpture ATLAS BLUE, 2012, was recently exhibited at the Rosenkranz Kubus XI at the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig.

Following the end of the exhibition Extract at the Vitra Design Museum, Galerie m Bochum will be showing a diptych by German photographer Thomas Florschuetz (*1957 Zwickau/Sachsen, lives and works in Berlin). His photographs of Louis Kahn’s architecture from the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California are characterized by a high degree of geometric abstraction. Their severity takes up the rigor of the building volume itself, while the perspective lines running in an oblique angle to the edges of the picture give the architecture a whole new rhythm. A comprehensive catalogue of the work of Thomas Florschuetz has been published by Hatje Cantz to accompany the exhibition Assembly at the Museum Wiesbaden (till 8 September). Florschuetz’s latest series Glas/Wasser, 2012, and Untitled (K52), 2013, will be on view at Galerie m in Bochum until August 21. The precision with which Aino Kannisto (*1973, lives and works in Helsinki) crafts her compositions, mutually interacting lines, parallels and color references results in timeless metaphors of waiting and
- perseverance. The intriguing figure of a woman in these images prompts the viewer to develop his or
her own associations. The works on display were created at Hotel Bogota in Berlin. Two institutions will be presenting Kannisto’s work in solo exhibitions this year: the Hotel Bogota in Berlin (from October 2013) and the Kunstverein Recklinghausen (7 December 2013 - 26 January 2014). Simone Nieweg (*1962, lives and works in Düsseldorf) shot her Zitronen und Avocado this spring in Hollywood, California. Her landscape photographs attest to the Becher student’s exacting powers of
- bservation, masterful compositional skills and subtle sensuality. Light and shadow, cropping and
composition are coupled with surprising color accents to form an exciting all-over structure. The selection process in Lucinda Devlin’s Lake Pictures gives evidence of the diversity that can be found in the interplay of day and season, wind, sun and moonlight affecting the reflections on the water’s surface and the many-hued glow of the atmosphere above. Framed in a square picture plane where the horizon line remains constant, these images of Lake Huron become symbols of space and time. Other photographic artworks on view include the perplexing collaged still lifes by Laura Letinsky (*1962, lives and works in Chicago) from the series III Form and Void Full and Albeit, as well as a selection of photographs by Evelyn Hofer (*1922 Marburg an der Lahn; † 2009 Mexico City). In the video installation HandArbeit II by the Swiss artist Evelina Cajacob (*1961, lives in Malans / Switzerland) three pairs of hands belonging to three generations fold tea towels, each at their own pace and with their own degree of care. The video work will be projected onto a similar stack of
- towels. Cajacob treats the passage of time, daily life, family and ritual with a casual expressiveness in
this delicate, heart-warming installation. The work of Carla Guagliardi (*1956, lives and works in Berlin and Rio de Janeiro) is marked by physical opposites that are linked together: air, water, glass, metal, wood and foam. Time also plays a role in the installations, because it exerts direct effects on the different materials and thus also on the space. Partitura (I) / Score (I), 2012, has a dancerly grace about it. In the rhythm of wood panels and soft white balls on the wall, gravity seems to be suspended. Load and balance, falling and floating are playfully frozen in time.
