  3. Counselors…What do they do?  Help students develop an individual academic plan.  Help student explore colleges/careers.  Monitor credits.  Plan interventions/credit recovery as needed.  Offer support/guidance with personal issues.

  4. How Credit is Awarded  . 5 credit is awarded for each class that is passed (A,B,C or D) per semester.  Student should have 3.5 credits at the end of first semester if all classes are passed, and 7 credits at the end of the second semester.

  5. CHS Requirements for Graduation  24.5 credits  4 credits of English  4 credits of Math  3 credits of Science  .5 credit Computer Lit (many students fulfilled this in middle school)  .5 credit Health  2 credits PE  1 credit World History, 1 credit US History, .5 credit Government, .5 credit Economics  1 credit Humanities/CTE  6.5 credits of electives (more if students have credits waived for computer/PE All students required to take the ACT exam 

  6. Diploma Options 24 ½ credits Standard Diploma College and Career Ready Diploma See next slide for details AP Capstone Diploma Earn score of 3 or higher on AP exams in AP Seminar, AP Research, and 4 other AP courses

  7. College and Career Diploma 24 ½ credits • 3.25 GPA • Algebra II • Must complete 1 of the following : • 2 AP classes 2 Dual-credit classes 2 CTE classes in the same pathway 2 World Language classes AND obtain a College and/or Career Ready Endorsement

College and Career Readiness Endorsement College-Ready Endorsement: Earn minimum ACT score of 18 English and 22 Math Career-Ready Endorsement: Earn Silver level or above on ACT National Career Readiness Certificate Complete the Armed Services Vocation Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) at a minimum score of 50 Obtain a Career and Technical Education Skills Attainment Certificate Obtain an eligible Nevada Industry credential.

  9. Biliteracy Seal Requirements  4 years of English with a minimum 2.0 GPA  Earn a 3 or above on an AP World Language Exam or Score of I4 in all domains on the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Language (AAPPL)

  10. Fine Arts Seal Requirements  4 years of Fine Arts classes  Outside performances/lessons  Senior project topic related to fine arts  See fine arts teacher for details

  11. Grades Matter!!!  Most colleges require a minimum 3.0 core GPA.  If student is planning to go to college, they should be getting Bs or better.  GPA is cumulative . It includes all semester grades from grades 9-12.

  12. Attendance Matters!!!  Students receive a No Grade (W) instead of a passing grade if they have 5 or more Unexcused/truant (UNX) absences per semester (10 for AB55) .  Absences not excused within 3 days are considered Unexcused/truant.  Students that miss more than one third of any class will be considered absent (30 min – 90 min class, 18 min – 55 min class).

  13. Infinite Campus Parent Portal Use to check student’s grades and • attendance. Email teachers. • Log in through CCSD website. • All students have their own username and • password as well.

  14. Strategies for Struggling Students  All students have been given a planner – check it often.  Student should meet individually with teacher before or after school.  Parents are encouraged to call or email teacher with questions or concerns.  Schedule a parent/teacher conference with student’s counselor.  CHS Solutions.

  17. Freshman Seminar Class  The mission of the CHS Freshman Seminar Class is to provide each student with the tools and resources necessary to ensure academic excellence as they transition to high school.  Academic skill development  Students develop educational and career plans

  18. Individual Academic Plan  All freshman make a tentative individual academic plan with their counselor.  All academic plans must be approved by parent/guardian in Infinite Campus.  Courses can be found at www.carsonhigh.com, Academics, Student Course Book 2018-2019

  19. HIGH SCHOOL COURSE WORK USE A PENCIL TO FILL IN THE CLASSES YOU PLAN TO TAKE FOR THE NEXT 4 YEARS

  20. College/University Requirements  Minimum GPA – (UNR: Core GPA – 3.0)  ACT and/or SAT  Minimum of Algebra II  Minimum of 2 Lab Sciences (Biology and beyond)  Minimum 2 years Foreign Language recommended

  21. What Do Colleges Want to See?  Challenging Classes – Honors, AP  High GPA – Good Grades  Test Scores – ACT/SAT  School/Community Involvement – Quality not Quantity  Demonstration of Leadership Characteristics

  22. Community Colleges Technical Institutes Apprenticeship Requirements  High School Diploma  All Career and Technical Education programs at CHS are aligned with Nevada community college programs so that our high school students have the opportunity to earn FREE college credits.  There are scholarships and other sources of funding specifically for students going on to a community college or technical institute. A factor in awarding those scholarships is GPA.

  24. Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship • Minimum 3.25 GPA • High school course requirements include 4 years of Math (through Algebra II) and 3 years of Science • Must attend a public institute of higher learning in Nevada

Encourage your Student to make a Counseling Appointment  All students will go over the individual academic plan with their counselor during their freshman conference.  Students are always welcome to make appointments to discuss future plans, scholarships, classes, testing, or issues.  Counselors are here to help make high school a positive experience.

  26. How Students Make an Appointment  Student comes in to the Guidance Office during one of the breaks (nutrition, lunch, before or after school).  An appointment is scheduled and the student is given a pass.

  27. How do Parents Make a Counseling Appointment?  Call your student’s counselor at 283-1915.  Be specific with your concerns.  Counselors can meet with you individually, with you and your student, or can schedule a conference including all your student’s teachers.
