How is Freshman Academy structured?

  • Three-hour learning block where instruction is delivered

in following content areas using multiple teaching and learning strategies: ○ English ○ Global Studies ○ Biology ○ Health

  • Students are split into 3 houses, with one content area

teacher per house

  • There is also a Special Education support in each house

What is the Schedule Like?

  • The three hour block is broken

into 15 minute segments

  • Students are assigned

sub-groups which are flexible throughout the year (20-25 students)

  • Schedule can flex based on

student/teacher need

  • Students check the schedule

How is my student graded?

  • Students receive a grade based on competencies in

line with the Whitnall School District grading system for each content area.

  • Upon completion, each student will receive:

○ 1 English Credit ○ 1 Social Studies Credit ○ 1 Science Credit ○ .5 Health Credits

Is there an Honors Program?

  • The Freshman Academy Honors program is an overlay of differentiated

instruction and deeper learning opportunities in conjunction with the rigorous curriculum.

  • The program is modeled after a college honors program.
  • Honors students earn “honors points” in the following manner:
  • Enrichment activities
  • Passion Projects
  • Service Learning Projects
  • Students who complete the honors program (20 points) requirements will

earn an “honors” distinction on their school transcript.

  • The honors program is NOT grade-weighted.
