  14. What is BOCES? • Board of Cooperative Educational Services • Public Organization • Enabling Legislation Passed in 1948 • Provider of Shared Programs and Services to School Districts • Often referred to as an ISA (Intermediate Service Agency) Lighting the Way to the Future

BOCES Service Area and Membership • Area of a single BOCES is called a Supervisory District • Sole Supervisory District of Franklin-Essex-Hamilton Counties • Districts Cooperate to Form a BOCES • Each Participating District is a referred to as a Component District • FEH BOCES has 10 Component Districts • • Brushton-Moira Central School Raquette Lake Union Free School • • Chateaugay Central School St. Regis Falls Central School • • Lake Placid Central School Salmon River Central School • • Long Lake Central School Saranac Lake Central School • • Malone Central School Tupper Lake Central School Lighting the Way to the Future

What Types of Services are Available • Career and Technical Education including New Vision Programs • Alternative Education • Instruction for Students with Disabilities • School Library System • Shared Instructional Staff – Itinerant Services (ex. Library Media Specialist, Driver Education, School Counselor, Etc.) • General Instruction (ex. Performing Arts, Academic Summer School, Distance Learning, P-Tech, Etc.) • Instructional Support (ex. Professional Development/School Improvement, Printing Service, Professional Development/Instructional Technology, Etc.) Lighting the Way to the Future

  17. What Types of Services are Available (continued) • Management Services (ex. Bus Driver Training, Shared Business Office, Substitute Coordination, Health/Safety/Risk Management, Etc.) • Adult Education ( ex. Certified Nurse Aide Training, Preparation to Attain High School Equivalency Diploma, Literacy Development, Specific Training as Requested by Employers, etc.) • Adult Continuing Education ( Community Interest Programs) • Services for Adults with Disabilities (Ex. Skills Assessment, Job Placement and Job Coaching) Lighting the Way to the Future

Why Participate in BOCES Services • Two or more Districts share a service that a single district can’t provide on their own • Centralized provision of service may be more cost effective • Multiple participating districts result in a cadre of staff • Shared Business Office provides the ability for enhanced segregation of duties Lighting the Way to the Future

Participation in BOCES Services • Each Component District Board selects services to purchase for the upcoming year • A portion of the cost is returned to the District by the State of New York as BOCES Aid • Most services generate aid • A few services do not generate aid • Each service is operated separately as a CoSer (Cooperative Service) • Money not spent in a CoSer is returned to the participating Districts Lighting the Way to the Future
