Michael Sekela, MD, surgical director of the UK Heart Transplant program, first conceived the idea of developing an ECMO transport team in the early 1990s. Today, our ECMO transport team now completes over 30 runs per year, while the hospital completes over 100 cases per year.

According to 2016 Vizient data, UK HealthCare ranks 10th in adult ECMO patient volume – treating more patients than centers such as Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, and John Hopkins.
