Caba

For Kids in the Village of Caba on the Philippines

In Caba you find fishermen’s quarters as well as mountainous areas. Many families live in simple huts, without clean water supply, without sanitation and often suffer from hunger. They lack in opportunities, education, medical services and social

  • security. In addition, they are exposed to natural disasters destroying their livelihood.

About 40% of the population live below the poverty line. This hardship on the one hand and

  • n the other hand the heartiness, the humbleness and the thankfulness of the Philippine

People drive our motivation to help. In huts like these, there usually live eight to ten family members. 2

Besides the central school with about 1000 pupils, the village of Caba runs 8 more small satellite schools with in total approximately 2,700 schoolchildren in 1st – 6th grade. Our local team works for local standard salaries. SwissPhilAid at present supplies 336 undernourished children at the central school and in 5 of the 8 satellites with a daily balanced hot meal within their school locations. 4

Our Feeding Program

Every day a wholesome meal is freshly prepared centrally by the cooking team, is transported to the satellite schools in special containers and distributed to the children. The costs for a daily meal and clean drinking water add up to approximately 80 CHF per child and year. The feeding program is our main activity

  • n-site in the Caba region.

Unser Ernährungsprogramm

The children integrated in our feeding program are measured und weighted twice per year by the school nurse Judie Ann Carriaga (see Photo on the right). She works on behalf of the school authorities and in cooperation with SwissPhilAid and is responsible for the healthiness of the children. The success of the feeding program is evidenced by a steady improvement of the BMI (Body-Mass- Index) as well as an improvement of school performance and considerably less absence of the pupils. 5 At our water tower next to the central cooking station, the pupils can wash their hands with soap before the meal. Information about hygiene is a central topic, which we include in our program.

Distribution of School Material

Numerous children cannot attend school, because they can’t afford to pay for basic school material. Therefore, SwissPhilAid hands out a package of necessary school material to approximately 600 children every year. School material per child costs approx. 10 CHF. With support of the teachers we distribute the packages sorted by classes and index of names directly to the children of families in need. To attend school, each child needs 8 exercise books, 1 pencil, 8 crayons, 1 rubber, 1 pencil sharpener as well as one tube of liquid glue. 6

Our «Direct Help»

Families without resources in the village we help by supplying essential goods for a humane life. This family indeed had a poor roof over its head, however it was missing any kind of furniture. From sleeping mats to water containers to the point of utensils for cooking, etc. We bring ill mothers and their children to medical care and finance appropriate pharmaceuticals. In most cases it is a matter of inflammations, open wounds, eczemas, rashes, coughs or other

  • diseases. The families are often

lacking in means for treatment of any kind. Baby Isabelle was heavily undernourished (see 3 Photos on the left). With special nutritious infant formula, she could gain important weight already after a short time. We look after such families at any one time until they are more self- supporting and stay in contact beyond that. 7

In the framework of our «Direct Help» initiative, we were able to provide vital heart surgery for the ten years old girl Paulien. We attended and supported this cardiac girl and its family during the whole process from the beginning of 2017 until the surgery in the beginning of 2018 and subsequent recovery. Tetralogy of Fallot is an inborn heart condition, which amounts to approx. 6–7 % of all inborn cardiac defects. Humans with this deficiency can expect an anticipated average lifespan of 12 years without surgery. Today Paulien can go to school again and can be considered a happy little girl! This photo shows Paulien after her surgery and after returning home in her convalescence. «Direct Help» – For Families in Need With our «Direct Help» team, Lawrence Nonog and Pepsi Pulanco, (see Photo above) we look after each case personally, individually and relevant to the individual demand. We act face to face with the families in need. 8
