Motivation » Belgian Inter-regional and Flemish Environmental Agency need for “further insight into AQ hotspots”, “reliable AQ information” & “explorative tools” » Many ‘hotspot’ regions still fail to meet air pollutant standards set in the European Air Quality Directive (2008/50/EC) » Tackling this problem requires a good insight into the air quality of these hotspots, and calls for tailored tools to effectively and successfully quantify and analyse the air pollution. » World Health Organisation (WHO) report: poor air quality → premature deaths of 420,000 people across the EU in 2010

ATMOSYS Objectives » To set up, evaluate and demonstrate an advanced and comprehensive air quality modelling system and associated web-based service for air pollution policy support in hotspot regions: » High level of usability by focusing on: relevant spatial scales, polluting species and by including exposure estimates » High degree of reliability of the air quality modelling system, both in terms of accuracy as operational stability » Advanced level of accessibility , by offering web-based interfaces » Broad and efficient dissemination
